Title: My Documents/My Pictures Folder not displaying content...
Post by: fartbubble on May 15, 2011, 04:44:14 AM
The My Pictures folder(1) and the files contained therein(272) are using several hundred MB, yet it does not dislay any of the files or folders. When i used the search option, i noticed that the My Documents folder also did not have it's path attached as the rest ( Documents and Settings, etc. )do. This is odd and i am perplexed. Tried everything i can think of and used some researched options to no avail; so I've come here for some assistance. Help please...

1. What an unpleasant username you have chosen. It might put people off, it kind of makes you say "What's that smell?" to yourself.
2. What do you mean "it" does not display any of the files or folders? Windows Explorer? You just see empty folders?

You did not receive an email from me. You may have received an automatic email from ComputerHope telling you that there was a reply in your thread. You answer it in the same way that you made the above post that I quoted.

Well, are you going to answer or not? So far, either by accident or not, we have wasted a lot of time on somebody who insists on naming himself after a bad smell. I hear a clock ticking...

Here's how it works. You post a question (as you did). Someone posts an answer (as Salmon Trout did). Then you post again then someone else (or the same person) posts again and it goes on just like a conversation until the problem is solved. Try to keep it to just that - all the other side chatter detracts from your thread.

Where is the message "no files selected" displayed?
At the bottom of the screen?
Does it happen in My Pictures folder only?
Title: Re: My Documents/My Pictures Folder not displaying content...

the "no files selected" message appears in the center of the screen. yes, it is only in the My Pictures folder file.

I just tried using the command prompt suggestion, but NOOOO Cigar. The message "no files selected" went away...so I guess I'm a little further than I was. Maybe tomorrow. I believe there is a way.

Could it be that the contents are 'hidden'? I only say this because a chap I know had malware (XP security centre) that promptly 'hid' everything in his folders. Pictures, documents etc.

Right click folder
Properties
Uncheck hidden

Just a thought.

Possible, but those type of malwares usually hide more, than just a picture folder.
That's why I asked, if he was having any other issues...

You probably need to enable the option to view hidden files. Go to tools -> folder options -> view -> show hidden files and folders -> ok

If you change this option, and it automatically changes back, then you probably have malware.

I tried the hidden files option in folders view already, but tried it again anyway. The settings remain changed after I change them. This was one of the first things I had tried when this mystery started. I'm currently looking at Windows Picture and Fax Finder being involved somehow. Perhaps exploring that direction, file ext. types may help. I guess then that if persistence is genius, then at least I'm on the right road.

Ran Unhide from the link. Went to My Pictures...still nothing to show. I checked the properties agin to see if anything had changed; it still indicates that there are 272 files 1 folder occupying 123MB on disk. After restarting the only change is finding several icons spread across my startup screen from my Desktop. If there is something that I can provide to assist in this endeavor please let me know. Thanks again, Broni for your help. Maybe tomorrow.

Have you possibly, at some point, made that folder Private?  I don't know if that matters but thought I would toss it out there.  I'm sure someone will correct me if that has no bearing on your  problem.

OK, we have an interesting situation here, but before we go anywhere, I have one more question.
The real folder, where you pictures really are is:
C:\Documents and Settings\BRENT\My Documents\My Pictures\adults only\8NNZ8N8B
Did you create 8NNZ8N8B folder?
That folder is actually listed as hidden system (hs) folder.

In Windows Explorer>Tools>Folder options>View tab, make sure, you're allowed to view hidden AND system files.
Refresh Windows Explorer (press F5), or restart it.
Can you see 8NNZ8N8B folder now?

This is how it looks like:
C:\Documents and Settings\BRENT\My Documents\My Pictures\adults only\8NNZ8N8B    d--hs--    [22:17 20/04/2011]
1[1].m4v    --a---- 76617519 bytes    [22:17 20/04/2011]    [09:15 19/04/2011]

Title: Re: My Documents/My Pictures Folder not displaying content...
Post by: fartbubble on May 17, 2011, 06:17:54 PM
Ok, to answer your first question... "Did you create 8NNZ8N88folder?"
Not that I am aware of or deliberately. That is not a file name I recognize. So, I followed your instructions, but when I go to Start>Accessories>Windows Explorer; I am taken to My Documents Folder. I then went to Tools>View>Folder Options and change settings for Hidden Folders, etc. I then pressed the F8 key but only saw the screen blink. But, in when I went to My Pictures folder I pressed the F8 key again and the "adults only" folder apperared. Repeated the same on that folder, then 8NNZ8N88appeared. But I do not see the view that you indicated I should see. I do see the list of files as JPEG icons, 272 of them. Amazing! But I am confused as to why I am not seeing what

First of all, hold Windows key and press "e" key to open Windows Explorer.
Secondly, to refresh view, you press F5 key (as I said before), not F8 key.

Then, when you go to View tab, you have to change TWO settings:
- Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
- Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.

Now, press F5 key, or restart Windows Explorer.

Alternatively...

Click OK.

In command prompt windows paste this:
attrib -h -s "C:\Documents and Settings\BRENT\My Documents\My Pictures\adults only\8NNZ8N8B"
Press Enter.

Check if you can see your files now.

I can't get it to paste...nothing is working. I typed the commands in manually 3 times; the syntax remains on the line above and I am simply prompted all over again. I am really having a difficult time with using my mouse or even keyboard commands to copy, move, paste anything when I am here. ARRGGHH! I'll check this sites procedures again, for such matters.

The files are there, all 272 of them. They are listed as JPEG icons. The results of are the same for #41 as for #38. Folder My Documents, containing My Pictures, containing "adults only folder", containing folder 8NNZ8N88 is finally visible. When I tried to open one I'm prompted to select a program, Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Nothing happened. I'll get back to that. I don't understand why I when I open Windows Explorer from the Accessories, I land in My Documents. Then when I used the Windows + e keys, I landed in My Computer. For cryin' out loud.

Thanks. I'll run it after I check it out. I know this is off subject, but why is Windows Explorer opening in My Documents from Accessories and then opens in My Computer using the Windows icon key + e on my keyboard? Seems odd to me. I suppose I've never noticed until actually having to "use IT" expressly.

OK. Is it just a default configuration? I would think Explorer would display itself as it's own program...like Internet Explorer. They each have a definitive title. (i.e.) I have Stieinfeld pickles in the 'fridge. One is kosher and one is not; though they bear the same name.

Yes. You can alter it, details here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307856

You can also change where it opens and with what configuration it opens by using the Run box and the switches detailed in that article.

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Internet Explorer has a home page which you can change, too.

Did you mean e.g. I have Steinfeld pickles in the fridge?

You keep kosher and treif pickles in the same fridge ??? Oy gevalt!

I don't really think we need to pursue this particular branch of the thread, which has developed a nature I have alluded to above.

Agreed... I'll follow the link. Thanks. It seems my interpretation of Explorer vs. Internet Explorer has been a misconception.

why is Windows Explorer opening in My Documents from Accessories and then opens in My Computer using the Windows icon key + e on my keyboard?

To explain this a bit more clearly...

The shortcut in Windows Start Menu (Accessories) for Windows Explorer is set so that it points to the user's “My Documents” (in Windows XP or earlier) or “Documents” (in Windows Vista) in the logged on user home directory. This is because Microsoft envisaged that most users will make use of the folder to manage their documents and files, thus having Windows Explorer opening in My Documents by default is convenient for most users. You can alter the default folder & view by editing the shortcut target.

However, because not everybody will want to go to My Documents, an alternative destination, My Computer, is provided and is available by pressing the Windows key then the E key. This one is not so easily editable - it seems to be hard coded.

To open Explorer in other folders or locations and to influence behaviour, e.g. what sidebar if any is shown, see the article I linked to, and also this one

... and literally hundreds more which are only a Google search away.
