Title: Programs Won't Uninstall...too many apps
Post by: rebelchic on March 02, 2010, 10:01:03 AM
I have too many apps listed under Control Panel / Programs and Features that simply won't uninstall; most of them are Adobe apps. I am a Toshiba Satellite Windows Vista, SP1, 32-bit OS, 73Gig drive with 3.59gig remaining, and 2gigs RAM. I downloaded Ccleanser and it was able to remove one program from the list (Adobe.com) but unfortunately it can't remove some of the other programs. Can someone please take a look at the following list of installed programs and tell me which ones are safe to get rid of and, in some cases, how? Thanks so much...

All the toolbars.

Needless to say, uninstalling the toolbars will not save any space. Just uninstall any programs you don't use or need. If you are not sure, Google the program before uninstalling (or post the names here). But we can't tell you what to uninstall, you have to decide for yourself.

Sorry - I just re-read your post. What do you mean they won't uninstall? What happens when you try? Are the apps actually installed on your system?

Actually, the HiJackThis list didn't pull up everything I see on the Programs & Features screen. There are several Adobe programs missing from the HiJackThis list. Attached are two screen shots of the installed programs.

You will notice that there are no options to uninstall most the apps from the Programs & Features menu (as you'll see in the screenshots I attached.) Some of the Adobe programs (Device Central, Stock Photos CS3, and Version Cue CS3) plus VCRedistSetup and neroxml programs won't remove from the installed programs list no matter what I do. I tried editing the regisitry and Ccleanser.

I was finally able to uninstall neroxml, but as for the others I mentioned there is no option to uninstall.

I'd like to help but you need to answer my questions.

You know, I'm sorry -- sometimes I assume too much. What I want to know is:

1) Are the programs actually installed on your system?
2) What happens when you DOUBLE-CLICK an entry in Programs & Features? Generally, if the program is not installed you'll be given the option to remove the entry from the list. And if it is, you'll be given the option to uninstall it.

I'm sorry that I didn't answer you entirely. I'm not sure if the apps are actually on my computer anymore since I tried removing them a while ago- what I mean is I went in and deleted the program files for Adobe Stock Photos, Device Central, and Version Cue (I got that idea from the internet). I still use Photoshop, so it's installed. Perhaps since the above programs all installed with Adobe PS I can't uninstall them seperately. As for the other programs they are showing up in the programs/features menu as if they are installed, but there's not an option to remove them. There are a few more that won't disappear or uninstall from the installed programs menu: PDF Settings, Point, Toshiba Value Added Package, VCRedistSetup, and WinDVD. It's not causing any major problems other than I can't figure out how to completely remove them from the installed Programs menu. I'm tired of seeing them there and would like to get them off of my computer. Just thought I'd give it a try here since I wasn't able to find a solution on the internet. I appreciate your willingness to help solve this issue I'm having. If you there is anything else you need to know, just let me know. Thanks a lot!

I guess we were posting at the same time. Double-click on an entry. What happens?

1) Are the programs actually installed on your system?       (They appear to be installed on my system since they're showing up in the Installed Programs menu.)

Generally, if the program is not installed you'll be given the option to remove the entry from the list.      (Nope, it's not giving me an option to remove the entries from the list)

And if it is, you'll be given the option to uninstall it.        (Nope, no option to uninstall it either)

So you don't know if they're installed? Do they show up in the start menu? When you open Windows Explorer and navigate to likely program locations (ie, C:\program files) are the program folders there and if so are there program files in the folders?

If the programs are NOT installed, you can follow the advice here: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/86721-programs-features-remove-uninstall-entry.html

I'll be back in half an hour or so and will check on your progress.

So you don't know if they're installed?    (not for sure, but I don't think they are)

Do they show up in the start menu?   (No sir, none of them are in the start menu)

When you open Windows Explorer and navigate to likely program locations (ie, C:\program files) are the program folders there and if so are there program files in the folders?       (None of them are in the program files folder either.)

Then what makes you think all these apps are installed ? ?
If they don't show in Add/Remove or Explorer Program Files where would they be ? ?
I'm confused...sorry.

So far I tried the following step from the link you provided, but it didn't work. I am going to try the others... will let you know if I have any success.

[NOTE: Open the Control Panel (Classic View) and click Programs and Features. If the uninstall option does not appear or Programs and Features is not displaying correctly, then try resetting the Folder View setting using METHOD TWO here: How to Reset Windows Explorer Folder View Settings to Make Vista Remember]

I was able to remove the traces of the uninstalled programs with Windows Install Clean Up -- it worked like magic! Thank you, Allen, for helping me! Have a pleasant day.

Okay, then it looks like phantom entries in the registry. See if that link above helps.

what happens when you double-click in an item in "programs and features"?

Quote
If I double-click an entry in the P&Fs it doesn't do anything

How do you mean "doesn't do anything"? do you literally mean that nothing happens? try right-clicking and selecting "uninstall".

Additionally- what do you hope to gain by uninstalling anything- note at the bottom it says "currently installed programs 104 programs installed, total size 2.11GB" so you probably won't get very much free space simply by uninstalling programs anyway.

BC - I'm guessing they are left over entries of apps that are not installed. Not sure how it happened for so many apps, but I think he just wants to "clean out" the phantom entries.

Ahh...

well, if that's the case, ccleaner posesses a "tools" item labelled "uninstall" that allows you to do everything you can do in the uninstall applet, including removing orphaned entries.

Yep - he said he tried ccleaner. I posted a link to several methods including direct registry editing as a last option.
