Title: Trouble after setting up Network Windows XP
Post by: JohnO on March 06, 2010, 06:16:45 PM
So I have been searching through forums and have found little help.  I just moved and got internet set up.  I have windows 7 on my netbook snd vista on my work notebook.
I set everthing up, and both computers connected fine.  Once i set up the security, the computer running vista will not connect.  It connects to the router but in the network and sharing center show "unidentified network" and gives me "local only" next to the access type.

If anyone has experience with this I would asppreciate the help

1.  Windows XP.  Where is this operating system in your configuration?

2.  Windows 7 (netbook).
     a.  What does it connect to (router)?
     b.  Connects via "wire" or "wireless"?
     c.  Connects "fine" to what?  Internet?

3.  Vista (notebook).
     a.  What does it connect to (router)?
     b.  Connects via "wire" or "wireless"?
     c.  Connected "fine" to what?  Internet?
     d.  And after security, will no longer connect to Internet?

4.  What security?
     a.  Wireless security at router that client computers must match?
     b.  WEP, WPA, WPA2?

Not to step on dahlerbear's toes here as he's correct in his requests. Have you in Vista tried right clicking the network symbol in the bottom right (two screens) and clicking on diagnose and repair?
You may need to reset the IP address or reset the wireless card. Try there first and then come back with the answers dahlerbear has requested if there is no joy.

Let's not forget MS has it's own internal troubleshooting tools that we should all use first then we learn something.
