Title: Inquiring if I am experiencing CPU failure
Post by: trimarco52 on March 09, 2010, 08:04:42 AM
Hi,

I am not sure what happen to me. My granddaughter computer hard drive had failed  and I bought new hard drive and did a reinstall of windows XP operating system and installed office and other programs and it was working fine so I shut it down and took it my daughter and when I turned it on it never booted up. There is power and I can see the fan going but it seems CPU is not working, because I do not see the normal boot up cycle. The monitor is just blank other than in the beginning I see the Gateway logo but then I get a message no signal.

I am thinking possibly the CPU has failed & I would appreciate any comments or suggestion

Sincerely,
Steven F. Trimarco

Sounds like the connection between the monitor and the video card may need to be checked.

Hi,

Thank You for replying to my question. The video card is part of the mother board . If the video has failed on the mother board and I install a video card. Would that solve my problem ?

Once again thank you for responding to my question.

Don't know and don't want to give you bad advice. The "no signal" message generally indicates the display is not getting a signal from the system's video output, but then again you said you see the Gateway logo - which means it IS getting a signal at first. It worked before you moved it, so you might want to recheck all connections. It does not sound like a cpu issue though.

Hi,

Thank you for responding to my question. I hope you are right and it seems like connection problem, but would not the computer still boot up even if the their is no signal to the monitor ?

I ask this because when I turn on the computer nothing happens other than seeing briefly the logo on the monitor and then send a message no signal.

Thank you for you advice

You have no way of knowing how far the boot process gets if the screen isn't getting a signal. You can try a different display to make sure that's not the problem.

Hi Allen,

Once again Thank you for your help for it is appreciated.

I am going to my Daughter house today to try to see if my issue with the computer is the Monitor. (I am bring mine over there to see if it will boot up)

I have noticed my computer (Windows XP operating system) was loosing time so I suspected that the CMOS battery is going (Over 3yrs old). This morning I lost my CMOS setting so I found another old battery and put it in until I can get to the store, but this time it would not boot up at all. So I put back the original one it did boot up.

I thought if the CMOS battery fails you still could boot up the computer by just going into the CMOS and get it to recognize the hard drive. However I good not boot up at all with the dead battery.

So I am wondering is it possible that my granddaughter computer will not boot up either because of a dead CMOS Battery (Same age as my computer and must be 3yrs old and never replaced.

I thank you in advance in any help you can provide.

Sincerely,
Steven F. Trimarco

Some systems will not boot of the cmos battery is dead, but in those cases you will usually see an error message (either "cmos checksum error" or "lost system configuration" or something very similar). Still, I suppose it's possible.

Hi Allen,

Well I went tried another moderator on my granddaughter computer and had the same results of no signal when trying to boot up the computer. I then but in a new CMOS batter and it did not help for I experience no boot up of the computer. I checked the CPU fan and when turning on the computer both the CPU worked along with the other two fans.

I did notice that the jack to plug in the monitor is loose and when I look inside the computer it is surrounded by a metal casing. (The video Card is part of the motherboard)

So I look up on the Internet and found a brand new Pentium D 805, clocked at 2.66 GHz  for $60.00 and I thought that was a very good price but hesitated buying because what if it is not the CPU and I install it and still nothing happens.

Any suggestion you can make would be appreciated

Sincerely,
Steven F. Trimarco

I'm guessing the problem is with the internal video card/chip, but I really don't want to give you any bad info - hardware is really not my strong suit. I'll ask a couple of the hw guys to take a look at this thread. Please keep checking back.

I stopped in on Allan's request here...

The thing that sticks out at me here is how you say the video plug at the MBoard is loose...
If you were to buy the new CPU and that is not the issue you would probably still have the existing video issue.

Is there someone you can borrow a video card from in the meantime before you spend any money and swap it in there just to test ? ?
Reason being it would tell you if in fact it is the CPU...and your money could be spent towards a video card instead of what may be a perfectly fine CPU...

An addon card is relatively easy to install and you would know from the 1st startup what may be needed to get this machine up and running again.

Hope this helps,
patio.

Hi Patio,

Thank you for the quick response. I did think of that and had some old computers but the video card would fit the slots of my Granddaughter computer. I looked at my computer and the video is part of the motherboard.

Maybe I can purchase a used video card online and if it still did not work at least I have a backup card.

When installing video card would their be any conflict with the original one ?

Once again Thank you for your help

Have a nice Day !

Depending on the age of the machine you could use either a PCI vid card; AGP or PCI-E...
We'd have to know what MBoard/machine that is to advise further.
They will not conflict with each other.....PC's are designed to use 1 or the other but not both...

Also, why not buy a new one? Just make sure you get it from a retailer who will accept a return if you don't need it.

PCI express would be the best choice...

Travel to newegg.com to review some of your choices.
A budget dollar amount would be the best way to search since she doesn't need intense graphics capability...
A solid PCI-e card can be had for about 40 Bucks U.S.

Hi Allen & Patio,

GREAT NEWS I purchase locally a used PCI Express video card for $20 and it worked and I downloaded the latest updated driver for it and it worked !!!

I am so Happy now my Granddaughters have their computer back. So I like once again THNK YOU for all your help !!

I have one remaining issues I had some old educational programs for math and reading for my Granddaughters (6yrs & 8yrs) that don't work anymore. These programs came from a windows 98 operating system did work in the windows XP when I change the compatibility to Windows 98 or just to the 256 graphics.

But now they don't work with the new Video card no matter how I change the compatibility.

Any suggestion or software I can buy that might make these program work because they are great educational games that they really enjoyed.

Once again thank you for helping me get my Granddaughter working again !!!!

Sincerely,
Steven F. Trimarco

Hi Allen,

Thank you for the quick response to my inquire.

When I tried to start any of my granddaughter programs a black screen appears and then quickly disappears and reverts back to the desktop screen.

I also tried starting the programs at the Command Prompt with the same results. However Just the black screen remains and I had to pull up the task manager and end the command prompt.

All these programs did not work at first until I change the compatibility to 256 color and resolution of 640 X 480

The only thing that has change was the video card and driver for it.

I thank you in advance for any help you can provide.

Sincerely,
Steven F. Trimarco

Are you saying that the games worked until you changed the video card (and then only at 256 color)?

Here are a couple of suggestions that may or may now work:

1) You say the entire screen goes black? Try setting the program properties to open in a normal window rather than maximized
2) Try reinstalling the programs. Some programs check for video compatibility during installation.

The card you bought was "the latest in video technology" around ~1995; it has hardly any 3-d features that are used by any semi-modern games; in fact, if I recall correctly it doesn't even properly support OpenGL. Additionally, since all you have are PCI and PCIE x1 slots there isn't a whole lot you can hope for in terms of video technology... I doubt you'll be able to get a card in there that is even equal to the on-board.

One question- I only really skimmed this topic- but it appears that nobody at any point suggested trying to reinstall the drivers for the on-board video; it would appear from this:

Quote
I ask this because when I turn on the computer nothing happens other than seeing briefly the logo on the monitor and then send a message no signal.

That when windows took over, you encountered the "no signal" message. Another option is to see if you can boot with the integrated graphics in Safe mode.

Hi Pc Programmer,

Thank you fro replying to my problems I am having.

Allen Suggested my problem may not be CPU failure but video card failure. Well I bought a used PCI –Express and installed it and the computer booted right up. However I have some old educational games that my Granddaughter love, but they would not work. All I would get was a flashing black screen and it go back to the Desktop as if I never even tried starting them.

I had installed these educational games in my Granddaughter Windows XP operating system, but to get them to work I had to change the compatibility to 256 color and resolution of 620 X 480 and once I did that they worked fine.

Now I tried them with the new PCI Express video card and they will not work no mater how I change the Compatibility.

So I look up a PCI Video card at CompUSA and hoping this will work with my Granddaughter games. (These educational games where bought between 1995 to 1999)

I was looking at this video cart at CompUSA

I found at Comp USA  for $16.96

Hi BC Programmer,

I bought a used ASUS PCI Express and I don't remember the model number. I just installed it and I had software that updates drivers and it did it automatically.

Tomorrow I and going to me daughter house to work on my Granddaughter computer and I will get the make and model number for you.

I just thought a simple fix would to but the cheapest pci card I can fine and hope it will work my granddaughter’s educational games that they really love. They were really disappointed that they did not work.

Thank you for you quick reply for it is appreciated !!

Hi Allen ,

I did not make it to my daughter house to work on my Granddaughter computer.

I will try your suggestion of reinstalling the software but since these educational games came in 3 1/2 disk I will have to install the 3 1/2 disk drive.

I should mention that I had these games on hard drive which I installed in my granddaughter as a 2nd drive. So I never really installed them in the computer but they did work running off the 2nd drive, but now they don't and I concluded the only thing different was the new video card that I installed.

If reinstalling them does not work would you think buying a cheap PCI card may make these program work again?

Once again thank you for all your help !!

Steven F. Trimarco

Hi Allen,

Well I Installed a 3/2 drive and try installing the programs and at first it seem to be working with the 1st program I installed which I was happy about, but trying the program a 2nd time I would once aging get a quick flashing black screen and revert back to the desktop.

So now I am going to dry to buy an old pci card and see if that works. All I know for right now they did work with the original video card until it failed.

If you come up with any suggestion please let me know or if you know support group for software issue that might be helpful as well.

Have a Good Day !

Hi Allen,

Well I had tried using the Windows XP compatibility Wizard and I had no success accept once the program worked but when I went back to try my granddaughter educational game it no longer worked.

This is driving me crazy why would work one moment then not the next ? All I know they all worked  before their video card failed and now with the new one it does not want to work. So I will try to get another card and hopefully it will work better.

By the way the video card that I put in their computer was a Geforce 8400 GS and if anyone knows how to get this video card to work with these older programs I would appreciate anyone suggestions.

Sincerely,
Steven F. Trimarco
