Title: System File Checker (sfc/scannow)
Post by: bigbutt100 on March 12, 2010, 12:25:47 PM
1.) The command "sfc/scannow" is supposed to check all windows critical files, is this correct?
2.) When the dialog bar fully completes the box goes away with no explanation on what it repaired, found, or scanned, why?
3.) I would think If it does find anything wrong it should show this, also it should show the results even if nothing wrong was found correct?
4.) Wikipedia has a great explanation on how to use this command or utility but how do I see the results... good or bad?
5.) Is there a "log" file of some sort I can find in %temp% or a cache folder?
6.) Is there a better program to check the integrity of the windows critical files?

-If "SFC" is designed to show results only when something wrong was found or needed to be corrected then this is not very efficient.

-Checking the Windows critical files is very important because if a hard drive receives a virtual error in the exact area of the disk that the critical file resides in, then the critical file will be corrupt or simply not work as well. If this happens to many areas of the hard drive, then your windows will slow down and in worse scenarios freeze. You will now not know why because you will scan for viruses, spyware, upgrade memory etc. and receive no positive results.

Does anyone have correct answers for the above 6 questions?

1. Yes
2. If it doesn't ask you for Windows CD and it just closes, it means it didn't find any issues. That's for XP. Vista, most likely, won't ask you for DVD, since it keeps backups for most system files.
3. See #2
4. See #2
5. Only in Vista and Win 7
6. No

ok thanks now,

1.) Where in vista/7 is the log file?
2.) If it asks for the disc this also can mean it doesn't have the files it needs for comparing, correct?
3.) If #2 is correct then how would we know on XP if there were files that needed to be corrected or not?
4.) There is no log file stored for the files scanned, repaired or in original state after using SFC in XP?

1. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log
2. Two possibilities: file is missing, or MD5 number doesn't match (file corrupted, or infected)
3. If XP finds a problem, it asks you for a CD and it shows name of the file in question
4. No log
