I have a new Compaq AMD notebook CQ61-313US with Windows 7 Home Premium. It came with a CD-RW/DVDR drive. Today I put a CD in to just listen to and nothing happened. I clicked the "computer" icon & the drive is not showing at all, only the C & the D drive. Am at a loss as to what to do. How could it just disappear like that, & what can I do?

Yes, Microsoft has documented a known issue and provided some help. The information in the lin k Allen gave will help you get it working again.
But you have a new notebook.
I have a new Compaq AMD notebook
The manufactures need to here more about this. This is happening all over the place. When anybody buys a retail computer, there is a warranty. Even when they claim it is not their fault. or something to that effect. The law in USA and many other places says they have to make good on any warranty
My point is this: This should not happen. It is widespread. New laptops are coming out that goof up the DVD player after a few months of use. We users need to get on the case.
A Google search shows the there have been hundreds trouble reports about new laptops DVD players in the past year.
Please call you support number and complain.

It's a software problem. It has nothing to do with the laptop manufacturer.

I really thank you both for replying. I have followed the link and done what it said to do. But still have the problem. After troubleshooting did its thing I got the message that there were changes made to the system. & try again to do what I wanted. I did, but no go. Also under "problems found" ...hardware changes might not have been detected. On the far right of that window there was the usual yellow triangle with an exclamation point inside.
More suggestions?

It's a software problem. It has nothing to do with the laptop manufacturer.
It has everything to do with the manufacture.
Unless he bought it with no software installed by the manufacture.
