Title: slide accessory on scanner won't energize

Running Vista home with a epson perfection 1650 photo scanner. The slide scanning accessory is built in the cover and does not energize. Do I need the original installation disk to use this. Is there someway I can tell if the unit is need of replacement? Any suggestions?  Thanks
