Title: Having a probelm with USB 2.0 Drivers
Post by: Fajorey on June 22, 2010, 04:06:19 PM
Hello. 1st time posting here so i hope i give you all I need.

The reason why i want 2.0 drivers is every time i connect something to any of my USB ports it tells me that they will run faster on a 2.0 USB port.... but i thought they were USB 2.0 Port, so thats why i am doing this.

I have a MSI MS-6702E 1.0 MoB.

I am trying to install USB 2.0 Drivers but im having problems.

A. I dont know what driver to install (What USB device to click on in  devmgmt.msc)

And

B. What driver do i need? I have a Few i see on a program i am using called, Driver Detective, but nothing is working atm. I fallow all the steps in the setup program but nothing updates.

This is what devmgmt.msc Looks like and you can see why i am so confused...

I tried the live update... but i didnt try looking. I found my MoB. but it says.

Note: For WinXP, please use Microsoft Windows Update to download driver from Microsoft or aquire the latest service pack

so i guess ill look on MS.

Im trying the Patch now, I dont know if this will work. patch is for under XP+SP1

You have XP-SP1 or SP3?
It's odd that the back ones give that message & not the front ones; they're all controlled by the same chip.
Pretty sure the front USB's are the yellow connectors at the bottom of the pic; each one has 2 USB's.

ok so I hooked up my USB MicroSD card reader to the Front, then i hooked up my TB HD to the back. when i hooked it up to the back i got that baloon saying it wasn't usb 2.0. so i clicked on it to show available ports and BAM! well see for your self. the usb ports on the MoB and the Port in the front are on different USB hubs... so how do i fix that???????

That's normal.  They are different hubs.  A possibility for this anomoly is the rear ports are damaged in some way.  Also, there is a BIOS setting which controls speed:
Integrated Pheriphals--USB Device Setting
USB 1.0 Controller:  Enabled
USB 2.0 Controller:  Enabled
USB Operation Mode:  High Speed

Yours may vary somewhat from this.

That's okay, no special settings.
Download USBView from Microsoft:  http://www.ftdichip.com/Resources/Utilities.htm
It's under the heading:  Microsoft USBView - USB Connection Viewer
It may help to sort things out.

You could also try this:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817900
It's not exactly your problem, but it won't hurt to try it.

well i could see this same information b4 in the dm. i guess another question then is how to i update the VIA rev 5 or later to USB 2.0?

also, this will create a problem for me, as i use a usb keyboard and mouse. if i uninstall all of them then. i will not beable to click restart. should i do a "hard" restart then?

I'm on my computer that has the VIA USB.  It's exactly the same as the image you show above in USBView.  Yours shows 8 USB 2.0 ports (the last group), 4 on the back and 4 inside.

Tell me more about your USB hard drive.  Is it a complete package or did you put a hard drive into a USB enclosure?  There are others that have the same issue as you.  Also, try your USB card reader in the back and see what happens.

card reader is the same. front says 2.0 back say that its slow. i see that many many people have the same prob as me... dating back a few years.  all have the VIA rev 5.

The TB Drive i have is a crappy slow POS. But it works... its a FreeAgent drive from seagate

My Question is why did the USB rev 5 take over the back? is yours the same?

My Question is:
1.  why did the USB rev 5 take over the back?
2.  is yours the same?
1.  It's VIA nomenclature for the Host Controller
2.  It's the same.

"...I unplugged my case's front USB leads from the motherboard, and whaddya know, now the built-in ports all run Hi-Speed USB2.0 now..."
He means unplug the cable from the motherboard's yellow connector, not unplug the drive from the front.  This will disconnect the front USB.  Can't hurt to try it.

this is a problem, I use both yellow USB hookups on my MB. one for the 2 front USBs (only 1 works other one is jacked up, looks like bent pins inside) and the other is for a diagnostic tool i have with 2 usb ports on it as well. its located in the back of my PC. I can give you more information on this but if i do this, then i will lose 4 out of 8 (7 working) ports on my PC...

I will look at the pins to see if that is "causeing" this problem. but i think that this is not
the case.

could this be a USB power issue?

well I unpluged the Front USB connection. but I kept the back. and guess what? yup now my back ports work with USB 2.0. All of them the 4 on the board and the 2 from the "front USB plugin thats hooked up to my diagnostic device with 2 USB 2.0 ports. this is very odd indead. and it sucks that i can not use all 6 but atm i am only using 3 for (WebCam, Mouse and keyboard) and 2 for usb MicroSD card reader and USB HD. so now i have 1 free slot open... yeay!oh well its better this way i guess.

If you need more USB ports, get an external hub powered or unpowered.  I like the ones with indicator lights so it's easy to tell if the device is on or off.
