Title: Shopping for a New Laptop
Post by: hockeysticks on July 12, 2010, 01:03:34 AM
I am currently looking for a new laptop...

One of the most important things for me is having a lightweight machine.  Very light is very important!  It doesn't have to be too small but I need lightness as I carry it everyday everywhere I go.  Durability is just as important as I take it all over the place on a motorbike!  That's why the Panasonic Let's Note was a good choice 3.5 years ago (very durable, lightweight, and a nice size).  I was hoping to spend much less and get something else good this time too.  Before my Panasonic, I had a Toshiba Tecra that was too big and heavy and fell apart on a regular basis.  It was a pretty decent laptop but a real lemon.  I have seen the new Toshiba laptops and they are a zillion times different.  They look and feel more durable.  However, I am still a bit concerned about getting another one.  I probably won't touch the Sony Viaos for the same reason.  While they look like beautiful lightweight technology, I am really concerned about their durability.

Ordering internationally is not always possible – it usually depends on the company’s willingness to do so.  There can sometimes be problems – some places won’t ship to Japan or the cost of shipping is extremely high.  However, there are ways around that (ie) have it shipped to a friend or family member in North America, and have them ship it to me from there.

One more thing…  I often like to run several applications simultaneously.  How important is memory?  I upgraded my current machine from 1 to 2GB of RAM.  I know that some new laptops have 8GB of RAM.  However, I don’t think it’s easy to get them without compromising the size and price of the laptop.  Speed is one of my primary operating concerns.

8gb of RAM in a laptop is ridiculously huge and I have only seen them from Dell but others probably do make them. It all depends on what you use the laptop for and how much you want to spend.
This a very open question as it stands.

What price range?  I don't think you can have too much RAM, but it will cost you.

There are several laptops that are made to be tough, they can almost survive being run over by a car, but they are expensive.

It's all about budget.

OK if your using your computer to make spreadsheets I feel 8gb of RAM is a little OTT.

It's all about budget.

Yeah think I covered that when I said 'depends on how much you want to spend'

If all you have got open is a single spreadsheet I agree, and that's all some people do.  But I think more and more people have multiple programs open, Excel, Word, email, games, etc., not to mention browsers with a bunch of tabs open.

I have 9 tabs open in Firefox I'm running mIRC, whatpulse, speedfan and including my AV and other minor programmes. I have 2gb of RAM and it's running tip top.

:EDIT: and in mIRC I have 12 chat windows and I forgot I'm also running itunes.

wait .... how much $$ do you want to spend on your laptop? Then maybe you could try to find the best for your budget.

Hey, Mulreay don't go away, but I can't imagine a more important and relevant question that what do you want to spend.  Maybe it got asked too often, but it a key issue.

I'd like to buy a Cray, but that's not going to happen.

on another thought, I usually had the feeling, "did I actually get my money's worth..."

you really do want something that isn't breaking the bank, but you'd want to have it last as long as it can ...  :)

Thanks for the feedback.

I think it is more of a question of how much do I need to spend rather than how much do I want to spend.  My last laptop that I bought 3.5 years ago is a Panasonic Let's Note CF-W5 model with DVD player / burner on it.  More specifically, it's the CF-W5KW8AXR model (silver in color).  I got it through an online shop here in Japan for slightly under 200,000 yen (about US$2000).  he price was slightly lower than it would have been in the stores.  I was hoping to spend quite a bit less but get much more bang for the buck with this next one.  Perhaps in the US$500-$1,000 range would be reasonable.  I think I could easily do without the DVD drive and simply buy one to connect if necessary.

Had some experience with these when they 1st came out. Then they were nearly indestructible --but they sure were NOT light weight. However now they are proclaiming the "lightness" of them and still touting the sturdiness of them. Might want to have a look at them. http://www.panasonic.com/business/toughbook/toughbook-products.asp truenorth

Basically, I have the same type of machine but the Japanese version - which is called Let's Note rather than Toughbook.  Overall, it's been a pretty good machine for the past 3.5 years despite a few problems (most of which were fixed under warranty).

I was hoping to buy something new but not spend $2,000 on it.  My feeling is that by spending a lot more money you probably aren't buying a longer life (say for example with a car).  I believe this because as everyone knows computer quickly get outdated.  I also believe that paying a lot more may not be connected with a laptop's durability.  More often than not, the high cost is associated with the brand and / or certain components that I probably don't need for my usage.

Again, my primary needs are:

Lightweight / Durability
Speed (applications and online) & memory (running a few apps simultaneously)
Battery Life

Beyond those things, I suppose I don't need anything special.  There are a few things I would like to change about my current Panasonic Let's Note, but otherwise, it's been a good machine (however, fairly expensive for my needs).

A panasonic toughbook sounds like what you need. Though "lightweight" doesn't really go with them.

I think 4G is plenty. You can do anything you want from what you've said. While your at it get the best Windows program they've got, it will turn out cheaper in the long run. I will tell you this, I used to be in the furniture business, I could sell an identical couch for $100 and to another for $500, the $500 one always lasted longer. Point is it doesn't matter sometimes how much you pay but how well you take care
