Title: opening a range of ports on vista
Post by: spmack78 on August 08, 2010, 06:45:28 PM
I need to open a range of ports on my vista and belkin router, while I was able to find the options to open a port in my firewall and in my router config. page there are no options I could find to open a wide range of ports on either, any help would be apperciated.

Go to: http://192.168.2.1
Go Firewall> Virtual Servers and you can set your range there.

It doesn't have a place for a port range here unless I'm not understanding the terms it uses. It has six collums at the top with 20 spots for enteries. I know the types for each I have some TCP and some UDP, but there is not room in the collums for start port- end port range nor does it specify where to enter a start or end point.

 Firewall > Virtual Servers

This function will allow you to route external (Internet) calls for services such as a web server (port 80), FTP server (Port 21), or other applications through your Router to your internal network.

Enable / Description / Inbound port / Type / Private IP address / Private port

 1
 2

Under Inbound port and Private port you have two boxes in each row to enter starting and ending port number.

Thanks for the help,
I thought it would've I checked several google searches before contacting you and walk-throughs and they implied it would but my router page has only 1 box / space under the inbound port and private port colloms. It doesn't have a range indicater -

You must have different Belkin type, than I do, then.
In that case, you'll have to enter each port manually.

omg this sucks, I was afraid of this, ??? I've only got 200 or so, I heard of 1 guy with  a 20000 port range  he wanted to open, I was hoping their had to be some kinda way to do this other than that. Now if I open these ports on my router will I need to do this on my PC's firewall as well. Why don't vista have a program for this.

Thanks again,

Not exactly. In firewall settings, you simply allow a program, which uses those ports and the firewall will figure it out.

You may want to consider a new router then :)

well, in firewall program there is an option to add /open port in the exceptions list to whats blocked the program should've allowed for a range indicator.

so i can open unlimited number of ports manually in my windows firewall exceptions list and it will work, also would the same port number go in the inbound and private port colloms?

No, this is not what I'm saying. Router's ports have to be opened as well.
