My son bought a computer with windows xp from a friend. It has worked great with no problems until someone t work told him to install IE8. Since then he has had nothing but problems. We searched thru the control panal and could not find it listed on the installed programs. How can he get rid of it and go back to IE6.
Thank you

Did you actually open the "Add or Remove Programs" panel and search for it?
Edit: To open the "Add or Remove Programs" panel, you first open Control Panel, and then open the "Add or Remove Programs" panel, a component in Control Panel.
-
It's listed under the name "Windows Internet Explorer 8".
-
"Add or remove programs" and on the left of the window search for "Add/Remove Windows Components". Find the IE and uncheck it.

Ignore this post. As Computer_Command & soybean said it's in Add/Remove under "Windows Internet Explorer 8"

If you looked where you said, you would not find IE8.
-
also, I would not go back to IE6. I'd stay with IE7.
-
IE7 should be a mandatory update for anyone still with IE6.
-
I'm surprised no one has mentioned it so far, but in general there is no reason that IE 8 should cause any real problems. My guess is that when he downloaded IE 8, something else either happened or got downloaded too.
-
did you try resetting ie8?
i had no problem with ie8 on my computer though.

Define "resetting IE8"
i had no problem with ie8 on my computer though.
That's nice. Perhaps you'd be willing to send the OP your computer.
-
but hey wait ... OP didn't describe what problems he had, maybe somebody here can help him fix that???
-
If he explains it...sure...

sorry for not being more specific. I did open add/remove and it was not listed. The problems it causes are hanging up, freezing, and really slowed down. I ran two anti-virus and spyware programs to be sure there was not a problem there and everything was find. I also tried Microsofts recommendations from their site but still cannot get rid of it.
-
just checking ... did you try doing the stuff on this Microsoft help info page (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/318378)?

Hi. Try running www.CCleaner.com There could be a lot of Temp files and other junk built up in there, which will slow things down. If there has been a lot of install and uninstal activity, I would run the registry tool in CCleaner as well, after having first saved the registry files ( it will ask if you want to that before "Fixing" things ). Another good app is PCDecrapifier.

The OP mentioned going back to IE6, do you not have to have IE7 before you can properly install
IE8 and if you do have IE7 is it actually possible to even revert to IE6. I was under the assumption that once you did have IE6 or later you could not totally uninstall IE because of it's integration with the OS, especially
if it's XP. In any event Windows Explorer should display it in Program files and Documents and settings /Application Data (showing hidden files) for uninstalling, shouldn't it not? Maybe give Revo
Uninstaller a try to see if it shows up there.
-
finally got it unistalled
-
I have no idea why one would want to uninstall IE...but that's just me.

Do you normally have two anti-virus programs running? That's a no-no.

So, now what? Are you going to use the security-hazardous IE6? Follow the advice here and at least get IE7.

I don't see anybody Giving CBMatt a hard time for using IE6...

Even MS has given up on IE 6. Some one held a mock funeral for IE 6 and MS sent flowers.

No they didn't. If I recall, they released HUGE security updates to IE6 quite recently.
-
They have and they haven't. MS has agreed to support IE 6 until 2014 but they are trying to get everyone to upgrade.
For more information about IE 6.

I have an old PIII/XP computer with IE6 and it still receives IE6 updates. Got some this week on Update Tuesday.

Well then I will! It drives me potty when designing new sites. PNG transparency is non-existant.
