Whenever I try to download anything (by anything I mean a .exe or .zip file) it won't allow me to, it always brings me to a page that says "Problem: Connection Timed Out" Is there any remedy to this?
-
Smitty.....
What operating system are you using ?........
Are you behind a firewall? ..........
Are you able to D/l other item ok?..........
Are you on dial up or Hi speed ?........
let us know
dl65 ???
-
I'm using windows xp
no firewall
I can look at pages fine, except for newgrounds, I don't know what you call what they use
I'm on a dial up connection
-
Smitty.....Are you able to unzip files ok ?
You cant d/l any prog that has an exe.file in it ?
What is newgrounds?
dl65 ???
-
I am able to unzip things normally. If say, I'd click on a link to D/L an .exe file or a .zip file, it'll just bring me to an error page, and it states the problem as being "Connection Timed Out". And, newgrounds is a flash game/video site, www.newgrounds.com , which it will not download any of the flash thingys (please forgive that, i don't know the word to use there)
-
Smitty......Have you dowloaded all the Win XP updates from..... http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp
If you havent ......this may well be the problem
let us know
dl65 ???
-
Smitty....have a read here and see if this applies to you .......
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q181/0/50.asp&NoWebContent=1
Does this problem only apply on that one site or other game sites as well?
let us know

tried windows update...... it said there was a problem and i can't scan for new updates. As for the gaming, no, it won't show any flashes, at all
-
Smitty .....can you be more specific.....exactly what was the wording of the error message when you click on scan for updates......on MicroSofts site
Do you have current updated anti virus software running on your machine ?
dl65 ???
-
on windows update it reads
Windows Update has encountered an error and cannot display the requested page.
Yes i do have current antivirus software
-
Smitty .....Do you have any of the windows updates installed either critical or otherwise .....
By any chance have you recently installed that version of windows on your machine ? Is it Home or Pro ?
dl65 ???
-
I've installed all updates, critical or not, up until about last week, when the trouble began. My Xp Home Version came installed with the computer, but I had to update to SP1 soon after I got it
-
Smitty ......how old is the computer and what make is it ?
dl65 ???
-
Smitty.....ok.....lets go back to when the trouble started....were you able to d/l zip files before that ?
Exactly what happened a week ago .....
dl65 ???

have you tried updating your modem drivers and look here to run some test on your system >http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q314067 and try connecting your modem straight to the main box..using extentions can fail sometimes and you could try a download manager like get right http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=463 this will help you if a connection fails...if after this you still have a problem come back it maybe ie6 issue..

about a week ago, I read an advertisement for a program called PC Booster, so i got a trial of it, it did a "auto tune up" and i was prompted to restart. I did, and everything was so slow, I undid all changes and uninstalled. Afterwards, I couldn't download and zip, exe or flash files.
-
*any zip, exe or flash files.
-
obviously this program altered some of your settings for tcp/ip. not sure if uninstalling and reinstalling tcp/ip will work from network connection properties. you can try it, and if it doesn't work, do a system restore which will hopefully restore your registry.
goto start and run and paste this in:
%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe
restore to a point before you installed pc booster.
-
how do i uninstall and reinstall tcp/ip?
-
i've tried system restore, it says there was an error and there was no changes made
-
Smitty......Have you checked to see that all that PC BOOSTER is gone and are you sure you restored back far enough......if your not sure undo the restore
dl65 ???
-
Smitty ......Now I want you to D/L and install Ad-Aware ....
http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj=dlpage&tag=button
when installed ...click on "check for updates" after you get the updates ....run the scan ........
let us know the result and then we can proceed
dl65 ???
-
When you said "I undid all changes and uninstalled." did you also clean your registry?
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/regseeker.html - Regseeker - Freeware
http://www.systweak.com/ - Advanced System Optimizer - Free Trial
I cannot promise you that this will solve your problem, but it will remove obsolete files.
-
hey dl65, how can she smitty d/l adware if he can't download exe's or zips?
-
Supportwiz.....I didnt get much sleep last night extremely hot and humid here ..........anyway what I thought was......and neglected to include was to use another pc to download and then install from a cd ....
Sure would like to know what it was that the uninstall took out .....unless it was some shared files ........but xp should have given a warning.........

smitty can you go in the events viewer this is in the control\ panel admin\tools and have a look in the error logs you can try this save your dun <dial up number> and passsword delete your connection and make a new one ..what modem have you got softfolk 56k and what speed did you have before this happened 33kps---48kps
-
hey smitty, delete you dialup connection and create a new one.
let us know if this helps.
-
there is a problem with winxp and certain modems>http://modemsite.com/56k/index.asp
-
It says I'm using a "Lucent Win Modem" i had anywhere from 49 to 53.2 kbps connection speed. No spyware using the older version (i already had adaware) but it's stopping my antivirus and adaware from updating
-
i deleted the connection and reinstalled, it's still the same. Should i try a different ISP?
-
smitty.....I was looking at the symantec site and I see there's a new virus called W32.Korgo.l .....and what it does is prevent your system from getting updates from Norton , Microsoft and possibly Aw-aware .......if you can get there ..... http://www.symantec.com/index.htm
look at latest threats .....there is a removal tool there which may help you . You may have to use another pc and copy it to a disk or cd and then run it on your machine ...
let us know...

have you checked your security settings in IE?
tools/internet options/ security/custom level/ downloads=enable.
heres a workaround you can use until this is resolved
right click on the file you want to download and choose save.
in the save window, change the extension to something else like ".old"
after it downloads just rename the file to the proper extension.
-
have a look here>http://www.hhosting.co.uk/modtech/support/LucXP.htm
-
when i click a link to dl it goes to the "getting file information" page, then it says the website is unavailable
-
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=http://support.microsoft.com:80/support/kb/articles/q181/0/50.asp&NoWebContent=1
This might help. If it has not yet been posted.
-
tried it. it didn't help
-
You can always format and reinstall Windows.
Unless you've tried that as well.
Did you contact your ISP?
-
try another modem..more info on net problems here>http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q314067
