Title: Connection Times Out
Post by: Smitty on June 18, 2004, 09:55:04 PM
Whenever I try to download anything (by anything I mean a .exe or .zip file) it won't allow me to, it always brings me to a page that says "Problem: Connection Timed Out" Is there any remedy to this?

I am able to unzip things normally. If say, I'd click on a link to D/L an .exe file or a .zip file, it'll just bring me to an error page, and it states the problem as being "Connection Timed Out". And, newgrounds is a flash game/video site, www.newgrounds.com , which it will not download any of the flash thingys (please forgive that, i don't know the word to use there)

I've installed all updates, critical or not, up until about last week, when the trouble began. My Xp Home Version came installed with the computer, but I had to update to SP1 soon after I got it

have you tried updating your modem drivers and look here to run some test on your system >http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q314067    and try connecting your modem straight to the main box..using extentions can fail sometimes and you could try a download manager like get right http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=463  this will help you if a connection fails...if after this you still have a problem come back it maybe ie6 issue..

about a week ago, I read an advertisement for a program called PC Booster, so i got a trial of it, it did a "auto tune up" and i was prompted to restart. I did, and everything was so slow, I undid all changes and uninstalled. Afterwards, I couldn't download and zip, exe or flash files.

obviously this program altered some of your settings for tcp/ip. not sure if uninstalling and reinstalling tcp/ip will work from network connection properties. you can try it, and if it doesn't work, do a system restore which will hopefully restore your registry.
goto start and run and paste this in:
%SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe
restore to a point before you installed pc booster.

When you said "I undid all changes and uninstalled." did you also clean your registry?

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/regseeker.html - Regseeker - Freeware

http://www.systweak.com/ - Advanced System Optimizer - Free Trial

I cannot promise you that this will solve your problem, but it will remove obsolete files.

Supportwiz.....I didnt get much sleep last night extremely hot and humid here ..........anyway what I thought was......and neglected to include was to use another pc to download and then install from a cd ....
Sure would like to know what it was that the uninstall took out .....unless it was some shared files ........but xp should have given a warning.........

It says I'm using a "Lucent Win Modem" i had anywhere from 49 to 53.2 kbps connection speed. No spyware using the older version (i already had adaware) but it's stopping my antivirus and adaware from updating

smitty.....I was looking at the symantec site and I see there's a new virus called W32.Korgo.l .....and what it does is prevent your system from getting updates from Norton , Microsoft and possibly Aw-aware .......if you can get there .....   http://www.symantec.com/index.htm
look at latest threats .....there is a removal tool there which may help you . You may have to use another pc and copy it to a disk or cd and then run it on your machine ...

let us know...

have you checked your security settings in IE?
tools/internet options/ security/custom level/ downloads=enable.

heres a workaround you can use until this is resolved

right click on the file you want to download and choose save.

in the save window, change the extension to something else like ".old"

after it downloads just rename the file to the proper extension.

You can always format and reinstall Windows.

Unless you've tried that as well.

Did you contact your ISP?
