Title: LAPTOP USB & Speaker problem
Post by: jacksonc on September 03, 2010, 12:19:49 AM
Hi, for some reason my speakers and USB ports on my laptop don't seem to work.

They say they are installed on Device manager (USB) but the sound doesn't even come up.  I defiantly have 1 speaker.

I have a IBM R50e with 2 USB ports and 1 speaker.  Both seem to work.  Like i can plug a USB in and it will give a flash of light then go off and never come back on and the system (windows xp) doesn't recognise that it has been plugged in.  As for the speaker... the hardware doesn't even show up yet i can hear low battery noises, but no start up.

Please help, if more information is needed, please ask.

Post or attach an image of your device manager. Once on device manager, click + sign on Sound and USB controllers before posting.

Have you gone thru control panel, sounds and audio devices to check on device properties such as volume control and defaults?

Make sure there are no device marked with exclamations or reds under these sound and USB devices. Do they have the same as these image posted?

Have you gone thru your Advanced settings to check for default device used for your laptop.?

Thanks for the reply.
I Cannot do anything on the Voice tab.  In Default Device in both Voice playback and Voice recording it said No Playback Devices and No Recording Devices, I could not access them as they were in grey.
I do not have SoundMAX Intergrated Digital Audio or Unimodem Half-Duplex Audio Device.  Everything else is the same.
As for the USBs everything is the same as your picture.  Apart from the things listed above EVERYTHING is the same as what your computer displays.  I could not go through the advanced settings.

Why do you just have one speaker?  And maybe it's just late for me, but it's not entirely clear if the speaker is built into the laptop or if they are external speakers. If they are external, could the missing speaker be AC powered with the built in amplifier?

Have your tried other speakers?

I have learned that it is a common problem for the T4x and R5x USB's to stop working because they can get 'toasted'.  And yes there is only 1 speaker as tis is a budget laptop.  It is internal and I can hear noises (battery, IBM BIOS noises) but not Windows noises or statup/shutdown tunes.

Follow this site first : http://pcug.org.au/boesen/ERUNT/ERUNT.htm
Back-up registry.

After following and making a successful back-up.

Refer to this site: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Use fix option #338 - Restore usb service.

Use this also after backing up registry under ERUNT. Then proceed with both fix options.

Thanks for the help but it still won't budge.  I have decided to go with plan B

I don't need sound, that is okay i would just prefer it.
PLAN B: Get 2 PCMCIA Cards 1 Wifi and another with 2 USBs.  It is pretty cheap only $69 NZD so it isn't a huge expense.

Although still if anyone comes up with any further ideas please notify me.

Thanks everyone.

I also noticed that the Human Interface Device Access Service was not started and could not be started.  The error is 126.  Could anyone help me to have a easy way to restore this service, that is if it will help the USB problem I have.

I also discovred that in the IBM configuration I could not enable my speakers as it said The Audio devices is not working or the drivers for the device are not loaded properly.
I could not enable it because of this.  I cannot figure out what it means by this as windows says everything is fine then IBM says everything is not fine.

Should I re-install the operating system to see if it makes a difference?  Or is there 2 easish ways to fix these problems.
