Made the huge error of trying to improve the functionality of hotmail and so downloaded the #@$@#%@ 2011 thing. Hideous.
The msn feature now has stupid quasi-news as a whole page and the tiniest bit of my contacts on the right, who are not even readable unless I scroll down to see who might be online. I also, hey what can I say?!, just want to see a list of all of my contacts whether they are online or not, LIKE MSN USED TO BE. At least you still get the little 'ding' and a box cropping up on the right-hand side if someone signs in.
Now, because I HATED this new nonsense, I deleted the msn feature from that #$@% 2011 thing. I then tried to re-install it. The blasted thing claimed it did that but now I have no way to sign in to msn simply, see who might be online and get a notice when a message comes in or someone signs on.
I hate them.
AND, I am stupid enough to PAY for this pseudo-priviledge only because switching to another e-mail program (such as Gmail where I do have a secondary account) seems like too much hassle for all of the people who already know me here (I know that is easily remedied) and, especially, for all of the saved messages I have.
Any help and you will be a god/goddess.

Right. Since I was so long-winded, I thought I would leave out the other part, the so-called file sharing. A laugh! Apparently this SkyDrive *censored* allows you to share one document. No. It comes out as a PDF-type file. Big #^#$ deal.

wait... wha? what are you paying for? Also, are we talking about Messenger or E-mail?
I haven't paid a dime to MS for my use of MSN messenger. Although to be honest I don't even think I have it installed on any of my PCs at the moment.
Just checked, my laptop has it. Seems to still work fine, so clearly I'm not paying for it. Apparently a bunch of people from CH have added me. Of course I learned quickly that nothing good ever comes from that.
Not sure what this "2011" thing is you're referring to, to be honest. (I guess it's their new version of Windows Live messenger? or their little "live" package thing.

files get downloaded as the same file type they were uploaded as for me.

@Josee,
You have made at least two mistakes :
1. doing changes in the original installation of MSN without having the possibility of going back to a previous state, that works properly.
2. getting angry with yourself due to your own actions and blaming M$ for it. An angry person can't think straight anymore. I never get angry with software, except my wife. Every software sucks, some suck even more than others. Keep that in mind.
I don't like M$ either, but I don't hate M$, I have pity with M$. M$ became a bank and does nothing but buying and selling software without any creativity. That's why smaller software companies create better software than M$ because they didn't lose their creativity like M$.
You seem to assume you can do anything with software. No wonder you are in trouble. There are certain rules, in case you didn't know.
Next time when you fool around with software, do an Image Backup of your system BEFORE fooling around OR
use "Immediate System Recovery" like me, which is much faster and then you can do anything with any kind of software or Windows and without getting punished for it. Be smart, not angry.
Also separate system and data, in stead of storing system and data together on one large partition-C, which is also an old-fashioned and out-of-date method of installing computers. Don't become one of these "Users of a lesser God", get back on the horse and become a man with a plan. I know, I'm just a "Starter", don't take me seriously.

Thank you so much. And my apologies to those this was just a rant. Guess I was losing my mind there. I appreciate the response Erik and you are right. I will be more careful and a lot more calm. After all, these are not sentient beings right? They are not being willful--although sometimes I don't know...
