Hello,
I'm new here so please bear with me...Thanks!!! :)
My problem is--- whenever I put a disk in the CD-ROM drive, a window opens that says:
Please insert a disk into drive m
This is what I have:
HP Pavilion 9870
Windows ME
60 G HD
384 mb Ram
CD-Rom - Misumi CR-48x5te
DVD-ROM-Samsung SD-612
When I insert any cd (I have tried numerous ones) into the CD Rom drive, the light blinks green for a few seconds and then does a flashing orange light.
I have checked and triple check all the cables hooked to each drive and they seem to be secure.
Any ideas? You help is appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Anida

When has this problem started?
Make certain the CD-ROM drive is enabled in the device manager. Is there an exclamanation point or a question mark? If so, what is the error code?
To access the device manager in Windows XP:
1. Right click on My Computer
2. Select Properties
3. Go to the Hardware tab
4. Select Device manager under the Device manager section

Thank you for responding. This problem started about a month ago when I tried to install a game for my grand kids. I then tried other CDs and nothing worked. I am in college full time and didn't have time to work on this problem before now.
I did go into the device manager and it listed the drives and said that all was working properly.
I also have scanned disk and defragged, scanned for viruses and spyware. Also scanned with Ad-Aware SE.
Hope this info will help.

Does it read none of your CD-ROMs or only a specific kind? Are these copied CD-ROMs?
-
It does not read any and these are all purchased CDs from a store. It also doesn't read any copied ones.
-
CD-Rom - Misumi CR-48x5te - Does not function
DVD-ROM-Samsung SD-612 - Functions
I suppose for now, you could use the DVD-ROM.
Sometimes drives need cleaning...depends if you have a lot of dust in the room or are a smoker. They make drive cleaners. It looks like a CD with a small brush glued to it.

CD-Rom - Misumi CR-48x5te - Does not function
DVD-ROM-Samsung SD-612 - Functions-but only plays DVDs and not CDs.....????? ???
I also hooked up an extra CD-Rom drive in place of the Misumi and it reacts the same...flashing green and then a fast flashing orange light.
I cleaned both original drives with an Endust CD/DVD Lens Cleaner. Still not working.

Strange ram setup>another issue>right click on the my computer icon.....click properties.......<device manager> now click the cdrom drive+ sign ..now click properties click settings and if the dma box is not ticked..........then tick it........then do the same for the dvd drive...........or
scanreg/restore..........posted back........before this command is executed.........
-
DMA was already ticked on both
What do you mean by: scanreg/restore..........posted back........before this command is executed.........
Thanks for responding.

:)Bump up! ;)

I am out of ideas. If I were you, I would take the CD-ROM drive out and test it in another computer. If it still does not work, replace it.
-
I had installed an extra cd-rom drive that I had on hand and it reacted the same way. This leads me to think that it is something other than the drives(both m &n). Do you think that maybe it is the cables or the board that they are plugged into? I have no way to check either of these in an electrical way.
Anyway, than you so much for trying to help me. I appreciate it.
Anida :)

it might be the cable.
-
Yes, try using another IDE/ATA flat ribbon cable. Or connect it to the secundairy channel.
-
What software program are you using to play cd audio disks?
-
Windows Media Player
I have been doing a search for a place to get a new ribbon IDE/ATA cable and I have not been successful. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Any dedicated computer store.

Load the cdrom disk <audio> now right click on it in the my computer folder..open with>>......chose the dvd player..now what happens...
-
Hi Merlin..I did what you suggested, but I don't have the "open with" option available.
I drove 60 miles round trip to a reputable computer store and purchased a new ribbon cable, installed it and ...darn it...it still is doing the same thing! Both drives are still not "seeing the cd", but I can still watch a DVD! ???
Thanks again.

Eliminate the CD-ROM drive as a factor by testing it in another computer.
-
Yep! You're right. I installed the cdrom drive into another computer and it did the same thing it was doing in the original PC. So, I guess it's a new drive!
Thanks again for all of your help. This is a great forum!

Your pc should have the option open with?

No problem, Anida. Should you ever require more assistance, come back.
-
Still dont think the drive the drive has had it...........does it load software!
-
Hi Merlin!
The CDrom drive will not load anything. As I stated before, when I insert any cd into the drive, it flashes green and then a fast flashing orange. If I right click and choose open or explore on that drive it says 'Please insert disk into drive'.
But..if you have anymore suggestions before I by a new drive I would be more than happy to try.
As I said before, I did try another cdrom drive in place of this one and the second drive did the same thing. Thanks again!

Hold on! I thought you had tested the broken CD-ROM drive in another computer?
Are you now saying that you tried another CD-ROM drive in the same computer and got the exact same results?
-
This is what I did.
I install the drive in question in another HP PC. Same results.
I installed another drive in the original PC...same results.
So I assume that the drive is bad, but I don't have as much knowledge as you experts, so I will try anything.
Thanks so much for all of your help!

By this you mean that you installed a working CD-ROM drive in the computer where the broken CD-ROM drive refused to work and that the working CD-ROM drive showed the same behaviour as the broken drive?
-
:)Yep
-
Which proves the pc has a corupted. shell>>>..use scanreg/fix....or scanreg/restore in the msdos prompt..
-
Did the scanreg/restore and no difference :-/

Why dont you just use your DVD drive for your CDroms. DVD drives are compatible with CDroms
-
It will not play CDs either. It will play DVDs. ???
-
To verify the basic function of your DVD-ROM drive, perform the following steps:
Close all running programs.
Insert a CDrom disk into the DVD-ROM drive.
If the DVD begins to autorun, this is an indication that the drive is able to read the media.
Close the splash screen if it appears.
Double-click the My Computer icon on your Desktop.
Right-click on the drive letter for your DVD-ROM drive.
From the pop-up menu, left-click Explore.
A window should appear displaying the directories on the CDrom media.
Attempt to open (read) the various directories by double-clicking on them.
Also try this with a DVD disk and tell me wich works.
-
HI Frankie,
I did as you said andthe DVD drive ;
will not recognize or play a CD
but will recognize and play a DVD
Thanks!
-
Hey Frankie,
Sorry. I forgot to say that when I click on explore for a CD it says: Please insert disk into drive N.
When I click on explore for the DVD, it opens and tells me what is on it.
-
Try to disconnect the CDrom altogether and just leave the DVD drive in. Put the DVD drive on the primary slave make sure the jumpers are set right on the drive and see if it will play CDroms. Or access the disk the same way i mentioned above. if it wont try the DVD drive on the secondary Master set the jumpers and again without the cdrom drive attached and see if it plays CDroms.
If is still doesnt work take out the DVD drive and try the same thing with the CDrom Drive. Let us know how you got on.
Im abit confused about when you said you took the drive out of the faulty computer and tried it in another pc and got same problem. This would obviously mean a problem with the drive. But did you then use that computers Drive the one working PC, to test in your Faulty PC and still got the same problem. and if the answer is yes are you sure your Drive was working in the PC that you said was working. Or did you get this Drive from somwhere else.
Hope this makes sense. anyway try the above.

I'm having the same problem as them. I have a Compaq Presario and I use Windows XP. No cd's will autorun and when I open my computer, the D drive is not the cdrom drive anymore. Sorry if I don't make perfect sense. When I explore my D drive, all I have is something that says recovery with a lock icon but I could have sworn that the D drive is where I use cd's. There was some computer help website that said the cddrive can change or something but I couldn't change it back. Right now the computer is basically telling me I have no cd drive. I tried most things said above but some things I can't do like this:
Strange ram setup>another issue>right click on the my computer icon.....click properties.......<device manager> now click the cdrom drive+ sign ..now click properties click settings and if the dma box is not ticked..........then tick it........then do the same for the dvd drive...........or
scanreg/restore..........posted back........before this command is executed.........
I open device manager, I click on the cd rom drive, i open properties but there is no selection for settings, and I don't know if I have a dma box selected.
Is my computer fixable without buying anything? We can't afford it.

Good to see you came back and said what the problem was. It helps everyone else if they have the same problem. It would be nice if more people came back with what the problem was. Even if nobody could fix it here on the forums and they had somone else do it. Instead of posting then never to be seen again.

but why dosent your dvd drive not play cd/s......one may asked.
