Title: File Explorer responding VERY slowly when not connected to my work network
Post by: dslauson on January 24, 2011, 09:49:08 AM
My work laptop (Lenovo 510W / XP Pro SP3 / Intel Core i7 CPU / 3 GB RAM / NVidia Quadro FX 880M ) behaves fine when connected to the work network.  However, when I'm offline, or on a different network, file operations in explorer become painfully slow.  Like, sometimes just clicking on a file will cause the hourglass for several seconds before it appears as selected.  If I connect to the VPN, however, the problem goes away.

During these slow file operations, the task manager shows 99% idle, and there is plenty of memory available.  I do not have offline files enabled or anything of that nature.

I have submitted tickets and talked to a couple people in my IT department, and they are stumped as well, though it seems other people have made similar complaints.  I have done some googling, but haven't been able to find a solution.

Here's a list of SW I'm running that might be relevant:
Malware Protection: Trend Micro OfficeScan 10.0 SP1
VPN Client: Check Point SecureClient

I'm a software engineer with a bachelors degree in CS, but my Windows admin skills are not that great.  Any troubleshooting help would be appreciated.

This normally happens because something on your machine (like shortcuts or file sync) is trying to find your network. When your not connected it still tries and and tries. When you try to open something it has to time out.

Are you part of a domain? Does it have some policy for file sync? Really this would be a guessing game until you found out what is trying to connect to your domain.

Yes, I'm part of a domain.  I'm not aware of any file sync policy, and the IT guys didn't mention anything like that.  I do know that explorer's offline files feature is disabled.  Do you have a suggestion for how to find out what is trying to connect to my domain?  Some kind of network diagnostics software or something?

If you are part of a domain when you first sign into your computer you should have the box that request your user ID and password. Below these two fields you might have a fiels that shows the domain you are signing into. If so there should be a drop down arrow in the field and you should have the option of selecting your domain or "this computer". Give "this computer" a try and see what happens.

Try using this MS Support link if it can make a difference. If not, then you could always revert back the default startup... --> http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841571 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841571)
