Title: Strange question re: trouble viewing specific site
Post by: crystaldb23237 on March 02, 2011, 03:36:11 PM
I designed a site for a charity and for the most part everything is great. The one problem I am facing is that I have 2 people (out of at least 100) that can't access the site. These 2 people are not exactly tech-savvy but I need to try and fix the problem (if it is in fact my problem to fix). It's a very simple, one-page site. I can see it fine on PC and Mac, multiple browsers, in and out of the house and on different OS. I'm not sure what I can do. Here is the site -

http://www.hockey4hope.org

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

First, find out what browser they're using.
Ask them to try different browser.

I tried that, but with them not being very tech-savvy I'm not sure that they did. I was hoping there was a way that I could check and/or update my code to make sure that no matter what browser, OS, platform they are using it will still be viewable.

I'm not even sure what they do see when they try to access the site, all they say is that they "can't get to it". I'm at a loss.

Well, how can we help, if you/they don't provide any info?

How about pinging it & giving me the IP address Broni?

It's frustrating, I'm a designer not IT support. I was hoping someone could point me in the direction of some code to make it something that all browsers (older versions too) able to see, if that's even the problem. I've never had an issue like this with a site so I really don't know what to do. I even had them change security and firewall settings and add the site to the safelist and still no luck. Are there specific questions I should get them to answer? Would that even help?

Yes. Refer to my reply #1.
In addition, ask them what browser version they use.

I'm thinking, it may be some DNS issue with a server.
Pinging IP works, but you can't go to the site, using numeric address.
Numeric address is not being translated to regular address.

hockey4hope.org does not work for me; using Opera browser.  hockey4hope.com does work.  However, it's much more than a simple one-page site, which is how the OP described her site.  So, we seem to have some contradictory facts here.  A strange case ...

Not MIA, just otherwise occupied.

I have no problem getting to the site through Opera, Safari, Google Chrome, IE, or firefox (all tried on Mac and PC). Other than the two people I originally mentioned, no one (that I know at least) has this problem. And if I can't duplicate the error, just like you can't duplicate the error, I can't fix it. That's why I came here, I was hoping someone could look at it and help me figure something out.

And yes, it's a real site. And yes, it is the .org, not the .com

I'm going to ask again about the OS, ISP and browser. Last time I asked the only answer I got was "Sprint Wireless". Not sure about the second person.

Here is what I get as DNS results on the server side of things -

I'm not experienced with this side of things so I'm not sure if this identifies the problem or not, but I thought the more info I could provide the better.

I just tried to view the site in IE; it didn't work.  So, I'm quite sure I can not view it regardless of what browser I try.

Are you affiliated with http://www.hockey4hope.com?  http://www.hockey4hope.com already exists and is much more than a single-page website and it is a charity-oriented website.  So, why are you developing http://www.hockey4hope.org ?
Title: Re: Strange question re: trouble viewing specific site
Post by: crystaldb23237 on March 03, 2011, 03:20:21 PM
Not that the reasoning behind the site is an issue, but they are different charities. I am only affiliated in the sense that I am the web-designer (and I handle the maintenance of the site). And I know for a fact that just because there is another charity with the same (similar) name, and a .com website with the same address as my .org has nothing to do with why only 2 people can't see the site when everyone else can.

And I don't have a problem viewing the site in IE, on a Mac or PC. I'm really confused by this problem.
Title: Re: Strange question re: trouble viewing specific site
Post by: crystaldb23237 on March 03, 2011, 07:52:35 PM
Ok, more research

the site does not have a dedicated IP address, but none of my sites do since everything is on the same server, which is my server.

Not sure if this helps or explains anything but it's still more info to work with.

It must be something on your end (i.e. server). I can't access it either, just get a Server Not Found error.

If that's the case why can 90% of people see it and only a handful having a problem? And why can no one have a problem seeing the other sites that are also on that server?

Check and see if you can get to some of the others -

www.rivercitybats.com
www.leddthanperfectsaint.com
Title: Re: Strange question re: trouble viewing specific site
Post by: BC_Programmer on March 04, 2011, 03:46:07 PM
hockey4hope.org loads fine for me.
www.rivercitybats.com loads fine for me.
www.lessthanperfectsaint.com loads fine for me as well. (you fat-fingered the URL there I assume :P)

All three resolve and load perfectly fine. I'm using OpenDNS for Domain Name Resolution.

Interesting, however, is that the Computerhope "is it up" tool, found here:

http://www.computerhope.com/cgi-bin/isitup.cgi

reports HTTP error 500- Internal Server Error on ALL of these URLs.

downorisitjustme.com reports that all sites are up.

It's hard to say why. If your Server is giving Internal Server Error's it might be an issue on your side but only with specific browser headers.

Those getting "Server Not found" could try another DNS server (such as OpenDNS) to see if it works then.

If the(s) site were recently registered (say, a month or so, maybe even longer) it could be that some ISP DNS servers don't have the entries yet, for whatever reason.

Not sure if you are using virtual hosts on this server but that maybe the problem.  Also your DNS may not resolve when the users don't use www. and just the domain.  Without more info just guessing.

Couple of points of order:

When a browser goes to a web server, one of the things included in the request is the "host header".  If my browser is off to www.google.com, first it uses DNS to find the IP address, then it goes to the server at that IP address and says "Hey, I want 'www.google.com' - do you have that site?"  Hence a server at a single address can host multiple different web sites.

With the site above, you would not get the desired results when browsing just to the IP address because the responding web server doesn't know which site you want.

What we're now seeing is a "Directory Index" from Apache, the host's web server.  This strongly suggests a server misconfiguration, or possibly a failure on the OP's part to upload the web files to the correct place?  I suspect the former rather than the latter though.

To resolve this, you really need to speak to the web host.  Failing that, take at look at any .htaccess files you're using - in fact post their contents here for further comment.
