Title: e-mail account sending e-mails without me doing it
Post by: luca on May 17, 2011, 08:36:24 AM
My computer seems to be running fine.  This morning I logged into my Hotmail account and noticed alot of failed delivery notices that were sent out at 5 am in the morning ??????  I was not on Hotmail at 5 am ?????  Also my computer was not on and unplugged (laptop with very little battery life, and it was unplugged).  Is this a virus or malware on my computer or is this a virus through Microsoft Hotmail ?

Any help would be great.

Were they to people in your address book? If not, your email address was probably spoofed and it's nothing to worry about. But if it was to people in your address book, please follow the instructions in the following link and post your logs:

I will go through the process and post the logs because the e-mails were sent to people in the address book.  My scans are currently running and I will post the logs once they are ready.  Just to give you all information that might help also, I do not run Outlook, so the address book that was used was the one on my Hotmail account.

Title: Re: e-mail account sending e-mails without me doing it
Post by: SuperDave on May 17, 2011, 05:30:58 PM
Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.

1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.

If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

The DDS log shows that you only have 1.2Gb of free space on your harddrive. In order for Windows to function properly you should have more than 15% (5.5 Gb). You will need to find some way to free up some space. You can do this be removing programs you no longer use and transfer important files, documents, pictures, videos and music to DVD's or another harddrive, internal or external. Please try to do asap because I'm afraid to start running any more programs on your computer because it may crash. Please let me know if you are successful in freeing up some space.

Okay Thanks !!!!

I will try to do that.  Is it safe after deleting some programs to use the Windows tools such as defragmenter and disk cleanup ??   Do you suggest that ?

Do not delete programs. Uninstall them by going to Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs. Diskcleanup is a good idea but defrag won't help much in freeing up space.
