Title: Thunderbird issue
Post by: armis on May 20, 2011, 02:31:01 PM
I have been using Thunderbird 3 for quite a while now and didn't have any issues. Yet recently somehow most of the time I can't access my emails nor from yahoo, gmail nor from my university email account anymore. When I press the "get mail" button I get the following error message: "Couldn't connect to mail server... connection was refused" same messages for all email accounts. Yet it does work sometimes which I find weird.

Is it firewall? Badly configured thunderbid (did it manually)? My router? What? If anyone had this issue or could pinpoint me I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you

Do a CHKDSK
Run a virus scan.
Install Thunderbird again.
If that does not solve then problem, try another email client.
Sea Monkey is close to Thunderbird, give it a try.

It is a combo browser and email, like the old Netscape.

The free Yahoo account is not a POP-capable account.  So, your statement leaves me wondering exactly which accounts you have set up in Thunderbird.  Were you using it for your gmail and university email account or were accessing them via web browser?

I have set up all three accounts on Thunderbird 3. All are set as IMAP.

Eh, I don't believe so.  Neither the free Yahoo! Mail account nor even the paid Yahoo! Mail Plus support IMAP.

I don't know much about this but when I open my "account settings" and go to the "server settings" I see "Server type: IMAP mail server"

Well, I may have been incorrect in my previous comment re: IMAP.  Although I find nothing about IMAP in the account settings when logged on to my Yahoo! Mail account, I found some info from Wikipedia; it's at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahoo!_Mail#Free_IMAP_and_SMTPs_access (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yahoo!_Mail#Free_IMAP_and_SMTPs_access).

Can you access all three email accounts via web browser?

Yes, I can access all three email accounts via web browser.

I ran ESET smart security and it found 3 infiltrations so I got those cleaned up. Added an exception in the windows firewall and tried manually setting up the ESET smart security firewall to let thunderbird through. I does seem to work now, maby there was an issue there. I hope it works allright from now on
