I Just bought a 320gb portable harddrive but when i try to copy anything onto it my computer turns on and off and i get a "Windows has recovered from a serious error" message... anybody know whats going on?

You should provide some additional information. The Model of your laptop and the model of the portable drive.
Do you have another computer to check and see if the same thing happens when you use the portable drive on the other computer?
If the unit is under warranty, you should return it to the vendor or procure a RMA from the manufacture.

My Computer is running windows xp Pro.
Intel pentium 4
3.00GHz
504mb RAM
and i dont have any other computers to try the HDD out on.

What type of USB data cables do you used? Did the error came after windows detected the hard drive and tried to install it without success?

sorry im not too good with computers.. it says on the quick install guide usb 2.0.. and i followed the instructions when installing and it said "your new hardware is installed and ready to use"

Is everything still working from your PC and on powering the portable drive and to transferring your files currently? Usually the on and off may have come from the power source or supply so you may wanna check that. And try to minimize activities while transferring files and don't copy large files at once.

yes everythings still working
i have no other programs running when im trying to copy files
and it does the same thing even when im trying to transfer a single 3mb song, as soon as it starrts to copy my computer just turns off & on?

Sorry, I missed that. You must return the unit immediately. There is not reason for you to do anything more. You did the installation correctly. There must be something wrong with the unit. Exercise your warranty. That is what it is for. It's not your fault. It just happens.

i just plugged it into my brothers laptop (also runing xp) and it transfers files fine?

That sounds good. What follows is my opinion. This does not represent the forum administration.
You have a window of opportunity to return the device to the vendor. The longer you wait, your credibility becomes less. It should not show that kind of behavior. Although your computer is suspect, it is not certain that it is at fault. Any attempt to repair or modify your computer puts a burden on you and your resources. Here is your chance to reduce any more loss by returning it for exchange or refund.
There is a factual basis for this opinion. A report I read said almost 50% of 'failed' hard drives were in fact not defective. However, retail merchants and their suppliers accept this as part of their responsibility to serve their customers. But with a strict time limit. In some areas the unconditional return privilege is limited to as little as 15 days.
My recombination is to take it back. And yes, there is a possibility that the unit has some sort of defect. Odds are 50% you have reason to declare it defective. Go for it!
