I think their idea is to integrate the node-based VOIP that skype uses into either MSN messenger/Live or possibly also the XBOX Kinect.

What ever their reason for buying they lost me when there was so many outage days earlier this month. Uninstalled for now

Well the outage is not from anything MS has done...the deal hasn't been finalised yet.
I can't imagine them letting someone in to fiddle with their servers before any transaction has taken place...

It was interesting to see the Linux Youth jump to conclusions with regard to the outages. "Oh no MS just bought them and they already screwed it up" even though they didn't actually own it yet. It was actually a result of one of the intrinsic weaknesses in the architecture they used, if I recall.

Don't ask me where just yet. There is an ongoing open source project dealing with the Skype protocol.
