Your version of IE?  And, of Windows?

Did you make any changes to your computer just before this problem started?  Have you recently changed ISP or had any general Internet connectivity problems?

Have you tried clearing your browsing history in IE?

In IE:: Tools/Options/Internet Connections/LAN settings...is "use a proxy checked" ...
If so you're infected...
Clik Here... (http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/topic,46313.0.html)  for further assistance...

i did say that , but clarified that in the very next post because i thought what i said didnt come out right and was misleading...

so, while i couldnt follow the link i did go to I.E. and click on tools and from there i reset to default web settings....dont know if there was more to it, but that didnt work....

so to make clear, I cannot open internet explorer, and i cannot open any microsoft websites with any browser

How is your PC connected to your network devices? Directly by ISP modem(modem and router) or ISP modem then extended router? Post also the exact model/brand of these devices.

Bypass hub switch and wireless connection and direct PC to the ISP modem by ethernet port.  Same problem?
You could be having the same problem with this link referring to MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit)preset or settings.

You're going to replace hardware to fix a software problem?  It's your money.  Since you want to throw it away, throw some over here. (LOL)

The Manual for your ISP modem router -> http://onlinehelp.verizon.net/consumer/bin/pdf/VzMI424WRUserManualv4.pdf (http://onlinehelp.verizon.net/consumer/bin/pdf/VzMI424WRUserManualv4.pdf)
It stated that this modem/router should work on if not most other ISP. Did you happen to have change Internet provider and use the Actiontec router? The MTU settings for this router is on page 66. The MTU default set is at maximum of 1500 for the router. If it happen that you have change provider or not and cannot access certain websites with the same settings, you could change it to automatic dhcp or manually change but not above the maximum(page 67).
Other information here ->I can't access some websites (http://ask-leo.com/i_cant_access_some_websites_why.html)

Right-click your IE icon on desktop and run without add-ons and try again. Were you able to access? If not, try booting to safemode with networking.

Take a look at your hosts file to see whether it has an entry for microsoft.com.  Reference: http://allthingsmarked.com/2006/08/28/howto-block-websites-using-the-hosts-file/

I could be wrong here Soybean...but if it were a Hosts file entry wouldn't all browsers be blocked ? ?
Firefox and Opera work properly...

If the OP cannot access Microsoft websites OR any Antivirus websites its possible also that the PC is infected by a Conficker Virus.

Yes, an entry in the Hosts file would block all browsers.  But, in his last post, he said:

... then realized i couldnt get to any microsoft sites using ANY browser......

You need to update IE to a newer version that your ver. of Windows supports...this actually may be the core of the issue.
