Title: Start-up error
Post by: Phlogiston on September 22, 2011, 01:05:40 PM
I installed an update for Steam and my computer crashed, since then I'm unable to restart outside of Safe-Mode. Trying to start normally gets me to the Windows logo screen but then the system restarts before I see the desktop.

I have no system restore points because I did a disk-cleanup a couple of weeks ago (and Microsoft didn't think I'd need even one of those restore files.)

I think the timing with the Steam update is quite coincidental since Steam runs fine from Safe Mode.

Just to confuse matters further (and probably get me zero help as a result) - I'm running Windows 7 through Bootcamp on a Mac (though I don't think it's a hardware issue since OSX still loads fine)

How would I diagnose what's causing the crash (and fix it)?

An awful lot of variables here...
Steam...which can be dodgy at best...
BootCamp...see above
Safemode not working properly...

Think i'll take a pass on this one.

BTW ...Diskclean does not remove restore points unless you tell it to...so don't blame MS.
