Ever since I used the internet at school I can not connect to the home network and most importantly the NAS. I've tried troubleshooting and it suggests to solve the problems manualy, which is not very helpfull. Does anyone have an idea as to what I can do about this?
-
I suspect you've had an IP address assigned manually. What operating system are you using? Wireless or wired?
-
I'm using windows 7 and I'm wireless connected to the internet.
-
Perhaps your wireless settings are still trying to connect to the wireless network at your school. I assume you connected wirelessly to your school?
I would suggest you go into your wireless settings & remove your school's network from its history.
-
thank you for your suggestion but it didn't work. I removed it like you suggested and even restarted the computer but it didn't work.
-
Please load up a command prompt, type the command "ipconfig /all" and copy and paste the output here.

Okay, good. Do you happen to know the IP address of any devices on your home network (e.g. the NAS)? How would your normally connect to the NAS?
And by any chance has anyone switched on the feature on your router where wireless connections are split into a separate virtual LAN?
-
Yes I know the IP-adress and I can access it when I type it into internet explorer, however if I want to access files I have to download them first. I used to be able to access the files via our home network but I can't anymore when I troubleshoot problems it says that the networkconnection is unavailable. I can access it using any other computer at home accept for mine.
No one has purposefully changed any of the networksettings or the settings of the device.
-
When you say "via our home network" I presume you mean using Windows Explorer? Try loading up Windows Explorer and type in two backwards slashes, followed by the NAS IP address - e.g. \\192.168.1.10
-
What exactly is NAS??
-
When I say via our home network I mean going to "network" on my computer and then I can click on it and I'm connected to the NAS (Network Attached Storrage). I can't do this anymore. I can access it via internetexplorer by typing in the IP-adress, I can access the files like this but I have to download them first, which takes a long time.

Yes, all you're doing is browsing the files via Windows Explorer, whichever route you choose to get there. So try my suggestion above. And be clear about doing this in Windows Explorer, not Internet Explorer. Report back your results.
-
When I type it in windows explorer it opens internet explorer and than it opens the ethernet site of the device.
It does not open the folder I want so I can work with the files.
-
my father thinks it might have something to do with the homegroup I'm connected to because I can't connect to other computers in the network either. I've tried to create a new homegroup but that had no effect.
-
Did you type exactly what I wrote, i.e. including the two backwards slashes ('\\')?
-
yes I did.
-
Hmm. Which NAS box is it? Some early Buffalos have issues with Vista/Win 7.
-
It is a Lacie NAS and it has always worked fine on my computer. So I don't think it had something to do with windows 7.
-
I guess then, the next logical option is to ensure that your laptop is using the same group as the other machines and that discovery is switched on.
First of all try this: Start --> Control Panel --> Network and Internet --> Network and Sharing Center --> Change advanced sharing settings. Make sure network discovery is switched on. You may also wish to ensure file and printer sharing is switched on.
Having applied those changes, try browsing to the NAS box again.
If that didn't work, on one of the other machines, check the workgroup it's connected to. Right-click My Computer, choose Properties. On Windows 7/Vista, click the Advanced system settings link. Go to the Computer Name tab of the System Properties box. Click the Change button to see the currently configured workgroup. On your laptop, follow a similar process only this time, change the workgroup to match the other computers. Reboot your laptop.
Any better?

My daughter has the same problem every time she comes home from school. We always play around with it and eventually it works. Changing the homegroup never helped.
One thing that worked once was to go to Network Connections, Local Area Connection, Network 2, Shared
Local Area Connection Properties
Networking
IR4 Properties
obtain an IP address auto

Thank you for your suggestion but it didn't work. The confusing thing about it is that I occasionally when I start up my computer can connect to the NAS, I have to give my username and password something I didn't have to do before but it works. But than as soon as I start my computer again the next day it doesn't work anymore.
I have deleted all the wireless networks and than installed them again, but that didn't make a difference either.

Do things work any better if you connect using a cable? Apologies if I've already asked this.
