Can somebody help me please? I am aiming to buy a 5.1 speaker system to use with my laptop. I am not sure if i can use this system with my laptop, i also do not really understand the function of soundcards and do i need a sound card to accompany the speakers. Thank you.

yes you need a sound card.
But im sure your laptop has one built in.
all computers and laptops do.

Thanks for replying. So as long as the 5.1 speaker system has the right connections to fit my laptop then it should work fine.

What exactly do you need a 5.1 surround sound set for when you have a computer that is designed to travel with you?
If your laptop has a line-out port, it will be able to support speakers. This line out port may be green, or it may be black. But it will most likely be accompanied by an icon that represents a speaker.
The soundcard may not support 5.1 surround sound.
