Title: connecting flat screen monitor to old computer

I have a Gateway model 500SE PC. I bought it 10 years ago. The CRT monitor went out so i bought a used 15" LCD flat screen monitor. When I hook up the VGA cable and power up the computer, the Gateway Logo appears on the screen followed by the Windows XP Home logo, the instead of going to the welcome page a small box appears sayin: input not supported. What do I do?

Boot to safemode...then rite clik an empty desktop and select properties...try a different resolution ...1024 X 768 is a common one to start with...

How do I boot to safe mode? Iv'e never had to do any thing like that. The computer has worked fine till the crt went out.

Tap F8 repeatedly at powerup...if you see the Windows screen you waited too long.

NOTE...the desktop will look completely different...don't panic...it's normal.

I replaced my old dead monitor recently with a 19" ViewSonic without difficulties. Did not go to SafeMode, just the usual replacement procedure.

We've come across a number of brand new monitors recently (low-end TFTs) that can't cope with 1024x768 and have to be taken to 1152x864 instead.  Weird.

The 1152x864 (XGA+) standard is getting more and more common now for smaller panels.
