Well I'm really confused. i had a hdd with windows xp. i then upgraded to windows 7 but when i upgraded, it shows that xp is still on but i cant use it. i then tried to format by reinstalling windows 7 but now i have windows 7 on both my hdds and yet i cannot format my old hdd.
how can i get rid of windows on my old hdd and why did it not erase the old windows 7 when i reinstalled?

This is intriguing! Lets see if i have this right. Your computer contains 2 harddrives. Both internals? Are they actual hardrdives or are they partitions on the same physical HDD? What did you use to install these versions of windows 7? How did you do it (step by step please)?truenorth

It didn't erase because you didn't format. You need to boot to the disc, you cannot try to format from within Windows.
