I have a new Lenovo desktop, Win 7 Pro, 64 bit, and haven't gone on line yet as there is no antivirus program installed. I've used Norton Antivirus for years, but I was wondering how the Free AVG antivirus program stacks up against Norton? And is it possible to download the AVG program to a Flash Drive on a computer running Windows Vista HP, and then installing it on the new one before going on line and downloading whatever updates were available for AVG? I know it sounds a little back-end-to doing it that way but I'm really paranoid about viruses. Thank you,

Yes, you could do that.
BTW, I'm using avast! Free Antivirus (http://www.avast.com/free-antivirus-download) and am quite pleased with it.

Thanks for your input, Soybean, I had forgotten about Avast.

Avast still supports Windows 2000 & I use it on my old laptop.

hi o2bin3
The difference between avast and windows essential is that windows essential is very light weighed as compare to Avast which make s ur system to go slow on
booting and during operations as well. i would suggest to get windows essential, moreover it updates itself.
cheers

Thank you for your reply. I don't need things going any slower.

There is no 'Windows Essential' anti-virus, i think you mean 'Microsoft Security Essentials' (personally, i'd struggle to take advice from someone who does not know the name of what they are recommending)

Any sources on this information?? I've been using Avast for years, no problems.
moreover it updates itself.
So does Avast

It should enlighten you with the better choices.

I was going to comment on this. Windows Essentials is the short name for Windows Live Essentials. Don't get that mixed with Microsoft Security Essentials.

Thank you all for your help. I would have clicked on the Thank You Button that USED to be on this board, but it seems to have disappeared?
-
You don't see it? I see it just fine. It's actually a Thank link...
For example, your Thank link says "Thank 02bin3"

All I have on my screen on each post are buttons on the bottom right side: Mark Solved - Reply - +poll - Unnotify - Send Topic - Print
Where is the "Thank" link located on your screen?
-
Mine is beside the Report to moderator link.

Maybe not enough posts to display?
MSE or Avast? Started with MSE on Win7-64 about 1 year ago because AVG gave too many false positives. I like it because it's so non-intrusive, no nags, no popups, no messages, no registration. You forget it's even there. Need to look at tray icon once in a while to see if it's green instead of orange.
Only had a problem with it once: tray icon would no longer display, but process was running. Uninstalled & reinstalled fixed that.
Now use it on WinXP, too.

I thought it may have been the issue for not enough posts...was not sure.

DMJ, I don't even have that? Does it matter what OS you have or what browser you use as to what shows up on various sites? I remember having it, and then a while back it just wasn't there anymore. When I would want to Thank someone for helping me out, there was no way of doing it other than sending a Thank You post.

Computer Commando, All I have in that area is: IP logged or my IP address, and nothing comes before it. Weird?! I guess I will just have to do as I've been doing and posting my Thank yous. Thank you for your visual of the problem.
