Title: Wireless range extender
Post by: RedRaz0r on September 22, 2012, 01:37:46 PM
Hello! So I'm trying to get my girlfriend a good birthday present. Currently, she doesn't have internet at home. She has a laptop and borrows her neighbors internet (with permission),  however, her laptop doesn't have very good wireless range. I want to get her a USB wireless card or extender to get her more range. Can someone recommend me one to pick up on Newegg or somewhere similar? Also, the cheaper the better. Thanks much in advance!

I don't think that extenders work in the way that you imagine. A wireless extender or repeater is a device that you put in a place where there is a good signal, and it re transmits the signal over an extended area. They don't turn a weak signal into a strong one. I think you would need to buy the neighbor the extender.

Why not just get her a good connection at the house from a local ISP ? ?

Actually i used a standalone add on wi-fi antennae receiver for a number of years on a Toshiba laptop that had a built in wi-fi capability. I found my reception range and strength considerably improved over the built in. This is the one i used.

P.S. Through use i did find that there are factors (physical) that can work against both signal strength and range on the device.
