Title: I E 9 cookie problem
Post by: 49 M on December 10, 2012, 07:06:40 AM
My Win 7 IE 9 has stopped accepting cookies from log in pages at Amazon and Yahoo. Yahoo will let me log in as long as I don't check the box to keep me logged in. None of the sites I visit including CH will keep me logged in if I navigate away from the page. Google chrome still works fine but the wife and I prefer IE.

I tried resetting in internet options. Tried the fix it tool from Microsoft. Changed the setting to allow 1st and third party cookies(with prompt). Put the websites I visit in the allow box & made sure there were none in the restricted box. Went back to a month ago when it was working fine with no change. Nothing had been added in that month except the Microsoft update and it was removed with the reset. Nothing helps so I'm hoping someone here can tell me something else to try.

What protection apps do you currently have and when is the last time you updated them and ran your scans ? ?

I have McAffee installed & set to automaticly update. It does a full scan weekly. I also have Superantispyware installed as well as Malewarebytes, update and scan with those monthly. Run Ccleaner slim weekly to get rid of garbage. I haven ran Superantispyware and Malewarebytes in a few weeks so I'll do that now.

Ahaaa...
CCleaner may in fact be the culprit...in the advanced settings under Tools i believe you need to select cookies...in the list pick the sites that you do NOT want to have the cookies  erased for...such as Forums, email etc...

Ran scans with McAffee, Superantispyware, Malwarebytes, & CCleaner. Found 5 tracking cookies & 3 PUP's which I removed. Moved websites I wanted cookies saved to right column in CCleaner & then ran it. Still can't log in to Amazon & had to log in again here.

Thats because all cookies were wiped with CCleaner...and you just made the changes.

Now that you've  logged in those sites should work properly.

This seems bass ackwards.  Are you sure you said what you meant to say?

None of the sites I visit including CH will keep me logged in if I navigate away from the page.
Is this unusual?  Does CH keep members logged in indefinitely once they leave the site?  I don't think so.

Yes that's what I meant to say. When logging in to Yahoo you have the option of just logging in or staying logged in for two weeks. Computer Hope gives the option of staying logged in forever. Amazon doesn't show an option but I normally stay logged in there as well.

Ran IE without any add on's & it didn't help. The CCleaner idea didn't work. Any other's?

Where do you see this option?

OK, LOL.  Honestly, I've never paid any attention to that.  I usually just login and logout when I'm done.

The autocomplete and remember passwords feature in IE/FF is a better and safer way than staying logged in on some websites you are registered member.

Update - I installed IE 10 today and still have the same problem. I found out that I can't change the safe search setting as well. Any idea's?

So, you're still at the same point as in your original post, right?  You can login to sites you mentioned but they don't keep you logged in when you close the page in your browser.  Or, is it that you can't even sign in to Amazon?

Pretty much. I can't log in to Amazon at all using IE. Most other sites will let me log in IF I don't check the remember me box. Chrome still works and the IE 10 install should have fixed the issue if it was just the browser. I'm beginning to think there is something wrong in my Win7 system causing this but I don't have a clue where.
