Title: Installing Win 8 On 2nd Computer
Post by: schuarta on March 22, 2014, 09:13:04 AM
I recently purchased an HP Laptop for my daughter. It came with Win 7 installed, and a second disc for Win 8 updating.

My own desktop PC has Win 7 Pro presently installed.  My daughter is happy with her Win 7.  Would her Win 8 disc be likely to load into my desktop, or would it have been already restricted to use only in her laptop?

No. This question has come up before
- and the answer is NO.

No, it wouldn't install on another computer, and yes, it would be restricted to only update if it found an existing qualifying product, namely the existing Windows 7 installation on the HP laptop.

I thought so.

Thanks.

Your answer is based on an assumption that the Win 8 disc is an OEM edition, right?

It's an Update DVD...it's stall on setup as soon as it doesn't see a qualifying OS installed...

Agree.  So then, it should work with either his daughter's laptop or his desktop system since they both have Win 7, right?  Is the version of Win 7 the issue here?  The OP said his computer has Win 7 Pro but he did not say exactly what version of Win 7 is on his daughter's laptop.  So, where does this leave us?

Last i knew the Win8 upgrade qualified with all Win7 versions...so it should work.

Unless of course MS is insidious enuff to tie the upgrade DVD's to the hardware it was shipped with which i doubt because the costs of doing so wouldn't warrant it....

I'll just save the Win 8 disc for my daughter's computer for when she wants to upgrade.

Thanks for your discussions.

What? Are your sure, Patio?
Thee is no limit to how ridiculous MS can be if the want to.

Somewhere I read that there is no retail DVD of Windows 8 yet.
But that is wrong.
Search : Retail Windows 8
brings up scores of stores.
But it is not clear if thee is both a home and a pro version.
I only see Pro and Upgrade.

Questionable link removed...

Daughter has an OEM upgrade license, so she will be able to install the upgrade in accordance with the terms of that. OEM licenses are tied to hardware. An OEM install can only be activated if the hardware matches.
