Some users come here wanting a full blown program to do something that has already been done many times over.
Like this:
Hello, Can I write a program to:
- help me make hotel reservations for my boss.
- find the best way to drive in the snow.My job
- to make a model of World War for class project. II.
- make lures for big mouth bass..
None of the above are so unique as to require a program from the ground up.
Or, how about this:
Can I use Microsoft Office to help me print menus for my restaurant.
Is he the only restaurant owner to have a computer?
No, there are templates by the scores.
Look:
11 Great Sources for Free Restaurant Menu Template (http://www.brighthub.com/multimedia/publishing/articles/90417.aspx)
...and the list goes on. :o
Moral: Don't build it; borrow a template.

I've used some Excel templates I got from Microsoft. But, as you say, templates for many purposes are available. They can be easily found by doing a search.
I see the website you mentioned has templates for a family tree. Users of Microsoft Office can get a template for Excel, Word, or Publisher at http://www.brighthub.com/multimedia/publishing/articles/128444.aspx?cid=parsely_rec
