I have AVG basic free anti-virus software.
For some reason, the icon has a triangle with an exclamiation point.
When I click to open......it has computer with an alert saying I am not fully protected, click to fix. The web browsing is protected but the computer is not, resident shield not active. I click to fix, nothing happens.
Additionally I have a red shield with an icon, when I click this it says Windows Security Center, Malware Protection
-Virus protection, AVG reports that it is off. I click to turn on and nothing happens.
I just updated AVG, restarted my computer, and it still says the same.
What is going on and how to fix?
Thanks.

Hello and welcome to Computer Hope Forum. My name is Dave. I will be helping you out with your particular problem on your computer.
1. I will be working on your Malware issues. This may or may not solve other issues you have with your machine.
2. The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine.
3. If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to ask.
4. Please DO NOT run any other tools or scans while I am helping you.
5. It is important that you reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
6. Your security programs may give warnings for some of the tools I will ask you to use. Be assured, any links I give are safe.
7. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
If you can't access the internet with your infected computer you will have to download and transfer any programs to the computer you're using now and transfer them to the infected computer with a CD-RW or a USB storage device. I prefer a CD because a storage device can get infected. If you use a storage device hold the shift key down while inserting the USB storage device for about 10 secs. You will also have to transfer the logs you receive back to the good computer using the same method until we can get the computer back on-line.

My advice is to dump AVG and go with Avira.(below) If you have trouble uninstalling AVG, use the Removal tool below.
Avira AntiVir Personal (http://www.majorgeeks.com/AntiVir_Personal_Edition_7_d955.html)
AVG Antivirus - AVG Antivirus Remover utility (http://www.avg.com/download-tools)

Dave, problem, for some reason I cannot get internet access on the affected PC.
The wireless connection is not working.
This is not a network issue, as other devices are able to connect.
I just keep being told my connection is "local only" and cannot open the web.
Is it possible my PC has a really bad virus blocking the wireless connection?

That's usually the first thing that an infection will do; disable your ability to download some tools. Try booting in Safe mode, download, install and run MBAM then try it in Normal mode.
(http://i424.photobucket.com/albums/pp322/digistar/mbamicontw5.gif) Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware from here. (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/malwarebytes/mbam-setup.exe)
Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
- It should update automatically if the computer is connected to the internet.
- Click on Threat Scan and click on Scan Now.
- The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
- When the scan is complete make sure all the infections have "quarantine" selected in the Action box.
- Click on "Quarantine All" You may be asked to Restart your computer to completely remove the infections.
- When disinfection is completed you can click on "Copy to Clipboard".
- Paste the log in you next reply (CTRL+ V)
-
I just started in regular safe mode.
I cannot connect to the internet.
The icon in the bottom right corner, when I hover over, says:
Connection status: unknown
The dependency service or group failed to start.
-
Did you try re-setting your modem? Unplug it for about 30 secs.
Please download Farbar Service Scanner (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/farbar/FSS.exe) and run it on the computer with the issue.
- Press "Scan".
- It will create a log (FSS.txt) in the same directory the tool is run.
- Please copy and paste the log to your reply.
-
Alright, I got it up in safe mode.
I got rid of AVG and got the anti-virus recommended.
I ran CCleaner, Spywareblaster, then MBAM.
Here is the MBAM log

Are you still experiencing trouble accessing the internet?
-
Yes. I cannot connect wirelessly unless I am in Directory Services Restore Mode.
When I sign in regularly I get told I am connected but with local access only, not Internet. When I use the browser I get told page cannot load, no server found.

There doesn't appear to be anything wrong with your internet connection. Did you try hardwiring the modem to your computer?
-
No, would that help?
-
If it works with a hard-wire that tells me that there's something wrong with the wireless signal.
-
I used both the yellow Ethernet and white internet wire.
The white/grey wire would not "click" in place, the yellow wire did, but no internet in regular start up mode.
Is this PC finished?
-
Did you try re-setting the modem. Unplug the electrical connection for about one minute and re-connect it.
-
I did, no help.
I unplugged the modem, took the yellow wire and connected it to my computer.
It says I am connected both to the wireless network and the wired network BUT with LOCAL access only.
Any idea what this means?
-
You can find out more information about that problem here. (http://www.ehow.com/how_8103011_change-access-local-internet.html)

I've tried but ran into two problems:
1-Step 2 says:
Locate the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" folder on the left side of the registry editor window and click the arrow next to it to expand it. Browse to the "SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{GUID}" directory. Click the arrow next to each folder to expand them.
I can get to Interfaces, but under that directory there is no GUID. Instead all I see listed is
{20114897-748B-4A11-BCC9-F0E93AEFEC33}
{20DA44BE-98A1-475D-B8AC-88DF3AD26CDD}
{2D337886-3709-4D31-AB17-1C63C566119D}
{3a539854-6a70-11db-887c-806e6f6e6963}
{D83D5627-FB49-437C-B3E7-C61C85550B27}
Which is it?
2-Step 3 says:
Click the (GUID) subkey for the network adapter that has the "Local Only" issue. The GUID, or globally unique identifier, is a specific number assigned to your network card. The GUID is found in the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SOFTWARE>Microsoft>Windows NT>CurrentVersion\NetworkCards" section of the registry editor.
I navigated to network cards but I just see under Network Cards a folder called 5 and a folder called 8. Which should I use?
-
Now, in directory restore mode, I can't access the internet which I could before yesterday.
It can't even detect a connection.
-
This is the only thing I can give that may help with that problem.
Please download and run MS Fix-it from here. (http://support.microsoft.com/mats/AudioPlayback/en-us?entrypoint=lightbox)

If this doesn't work, do I need an in person repair?
How can I download this if the internet connection does not work on that PC?
-
You can download it to a memory stick.

Try clicking on "Visit our solution center".

OK, I went over and clicked.
It says to choose one of several problem areas options.
I choose "Top Solutions" and here is a screenshot of the options:
I also choose "Windows" problem areas, did not know what to select.

Select any one of them and let it run.

This is not going smooth.
I downloaded:

No, it's just a glitch. I would suggest that you try all the sites here (http://www.bing.com/search?q=Access+to+Local+%26+Internet&src=IE-SearchBox&FORM=IE8SRC)to see if you can find a solution to that problem. But first, please run the Farbar Service Scanner in Reply # 5 and post the log.

1. Here is the log.
2. As of now, the PC cannot even detect a wireless network. So I am not connected at all, internet or local.

Please do this even if you don't have the OS disk.
Do you have your OS CD/DVD?
If so,
1/ Click the Start button.
2/ From the Start Menu, Click All programs followed by Accessories.
3/ In the Accessories menu, Right Click on the Command Prompt option.
4/ From the drop down menu that appears, Click on the Run as administrator option.
5/ If you have the User Account Control (UAC) enabled you will be asked for authorisation prior to the command prompt opening. You may simply need to press the Continue button if you are the administrator or insert the administrator password etc.
6/ In the Command Prompt window, type: sfc /scannow and then press Enter.
7/ A message will appear stating that the system scan will begin.
8/ Be patient because the scan may take some time.
9/ If any files require replacing SFC will replace them. You may be asked to insert your Vista DVD for this process to continue.
10/ If everything is okay you should, after the scan, see the following message Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations.
11/ After the scan has completed, Close the command prompt window.
-
I don't......
-
Run it anyway. If there are any problems with the OS files it will prompt you for the disk.
