Title: Documents folder has changed, can't get access
Post by: ronymaxwell on October 28, 2014, 02:39:15 AM
I tried to load a file into MS Word from my Documents folder. I navigated to the folder with Windows Explorer and it appeared that there was only one file in there: desktop.ini. I checked the folder properties and it shows up as a system folder. Has the pointer to the folder somehow changed?

No. My Documents is the default folder for material created or edited by the user. If the location has change, logically that would mean one of:
Not mentioned is a hard drive failure. You do make backups - Right?  :)

Do a search on your system for either "Documents", "My Documents" or the name of any file that you know is in the folder.

A search fails to find any *.doc or *.docx files. C:\Users\Default shows a My Documents folder but Access is Denied.

1) What is new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

2) Please run full system scans with BOTH your installed anti virus app and with MalwareBytes

I don't  think anything had changed before it happened. The laptop is part of my home network, I usually just access files from it.

I have found the desktop.ini file on many of the folders in my desktop computer as well. I opened it in Notebook and saw the following...

[.ShellClassInfo]
FolderType=MusicAlbum
MusicBuyUrl=http://redir.metaservices.microsoft.com/redir/buynow/?
providerName=AMG&albumID=FD5E621B-3F38-43D0-B070-5E18D9DEDD93&a_id=R%20%20%20277535&album=The%20Very%20Best%20of%2010cc%20[Mercury]
&artistID=E8BEBFC9-331B-4E9B-B1E3-657A0DA74A13&p_id=P%20%20%20%2050039&artist=10cc&locale=409&geoid=f2&version=12.0.7601.17514&userlocale=809

Should I run the scans on both computers?

Okay, I've googled Desktop.ini and I see its not a problem. Scan showed no problems. Going to close this now, put it down to experience, and start backing up my files.

Thanks, Patio. but it didn't help. Just brings the same folder up without the files. Still have the folder, not the files.

There is a guest account which is switched off. I am logged on with my Administrator account (password protected).

Switched on the Guest Account and signed in. Nothing in the Documents directory.
