Title: Laptop won't shut down or run any programs

I recently upgraded to Windows 10 on my 3 year old laptop and it was running fine up until yesterday. When I shut it down it hangs on a screen with the dots that chase each other in a circle and stays there. I tried forcing shutdown by holding the power button but it just went to sleep. When I woke it again, none of the programs would open and neither would the start menu. I pressed the windows button and R and typed in "shutdown /s /t 5" but it says "no such interface supported".
Eventually it shut down yesterday and worked fine after but has gone back to the same thing today.

I got desperate and took out the battery. When it restarted it was loading updates. I'm hoping that this was the cause of the problem but I also turned off fast startup as this was recommended elsewhere.
