for a while now, every time i start up the computer and log on, a message pops up. it says:
16 bit MS-DOS Subsysem
c:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe
c:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Chose 'close' to terminate the application.
then theres the choices for 'close' or 'ignore'. clicking eithre of them causes the message to pop up again.
i have no idea what has happened to it. the computer is Windows XP. this has been happening for about 5 months now and i cannot figure out why. can someone please help me!?

Copy c:\windows\repair\autoexec.nt and paste it into the
c:\windows\system32 directory.

well, i tried clicking on thoselinks, but they opened for about 3 seonds then closed right away. the same thing happened when i tried to read the virus page on the main site. this has never happened before, so im reallly confused...

And do you have any spyware/adware/virus prevention in place and being used? If so, what?

im pretty sure theres nothing being used, but there is a bunch on the computer, just not installed.
i know thats not good...but...?

i did copy them, they still closed, but i managed to make the first one stay open somehow...and now its "transfering data..." ?

haha and thats just the beginning of the rat...theres so much more thats messed up with this computer and i have no idea how...other than viruses...and the sad part is that we just got this computer in april i think. and most of the problems started around july.

It may be nothing and all you have to do is...
Copy c:\windows\repair\autoexec.nt and paste it into the
c:\windows\system32 directory.
But it won't hurt to make sure your computer is clean first.

c:\windows\system32 directory? i looked...and couldnt find it...but then again i could have been looking in the wrong place...?

He means copy all whats in the 'reapir' folder, and then put it into the SYSTEM32 folder...
It's under windows.... In your main HD

After you are sure your computer is clean someone will show you how to copy the file.

Not everything in the repair folder, just the autoexec.nt file.

ya...thats what i thought...but i looked...and there is no SYSTEM32 folder....theres "system" ..is that is???

Should be both... Although, i know someone who didn't have either files, which i found very weird...

no, There is one... Otherwise your Sytem wouldn't work. As Those two folders consist of, Well... Things that make the PC work.

well...the scanning is doing the same as it was 2 hours ago? still "transfering data.." maybe i should cancel it...
and where is the folder if its not there???

Double click on 'My Computer'
Double click on 'Local Disk (C:)'
Double click on 'Windows'
Scroll down and look for the 'System32' directory.

Tools>Folder Options>View and UNTICK "Hide protected Operating System Files"
Then look again. :)

ok i did that, and tis still not there. but now theres a whole bunch of folders at the top and the writing is blue...is that normal? kay but it still isnt there...

Are you running in IE? Trying opening another broswer or download one. Just the problem that that wouldn't stay open either :\

yes im using IE and even with opening another browser they are closing. but it doesnt close for any other sites...just those...

AVG Free (Set options to 'scan all files')

Turn off System Restore if applicable. (ME & XP users)
Run Ccleaner
Run Ad-Aware
Run Spybot
Run Microsoft Antispyware
Run AVG Free
Run Ewido
Re-start in Safe Mode
Re-run AVG Free
Re-start in Normal Mode
Turn on System Restore if applicable. (ME & XP users)
Then back to...

Just them? try some other freeware sites. Something may be closing any website related to virus/spyware removers. Checked your firewall? Or a virus...

Hey, well im new to this but i used to have half life one on my computer but i uninstalled it... when i went to reinstall it the other day i got the same ms dos warning so i browsed the web and i came up with some commands to put in the command promp (cmd in run) and it came up with the same warning so i cant use that and now i cant find the same system 32 folder in my windows folder.... help please its so frusterating
