a certain member of my family is using my computer for downloading wallpapers to their phone. I am finding some interesting things in the browser history. tell me please, do popups show up in the pull down menu showing the browser history. Or are all the things in a browser history trail definitely websites that have been visited?
Also, I am getting alot of porn wallpapers and some videos on my computer. You know how sometimes when you download a screensaver from a site, you can get spyware or other things too? When you download a wallpaper, are other wallpapers possibly downloaded also? Or maybe if this person views wallpaper sites that have both good and explicit wallpapers on one page, maybe the webpage is being placed in my temporary internet folder and the individual wallpaper pics from that page are showing up in wallpaper files even though they weren't intentionally downloaded.
If a person goes to a website that has a porn video playing in a seperate window, will that video end up on my computer automatically, or will it have to be downloaded intentionally? (or can it also end up videos file because it is on the page in the temporary internet file)
Just trying to figure out what's going on before I get mad and yell at someone! I hate my computer to have that kind of content on it. eek!

Browser history shows sites visited, not popups. Video would have to be downloaded, so no accidents there, eiher.
Your computer obviously has been purposely used for porn sites and purposes. There are no accidents or good explanations for anything else I would believe.
You can either ban this person from your computer or not, but afterwards you will cerainly need to clean up your system to remove all traces of this, as well as the spyware/adware/viruses that ALWAYS accompanies this type of indiscreet surfing.
You can invest in spy software to monitor the use of the machine in the future as well, but you certainly have enough of a smoking gun already. Again, that stuff does NOT just magically appear. It has been sought out by someone siting at your machine.

If you're on the net & you see it on your screen then it is also on your computer and so is the record of it.

Been there and had THAT happen with my computer >:(
NOTHING IS DOWNLOADED ACCIDENTALLY! View it and it is on your computer!
Sometimes it can be useful to know what "younger" family members are viewing on the internet, especially after you have gone to bed.
Make sure you clear YOUR history and cache files once YOU have finished, to make it easier to find the offending sites! ;D
If the sites are recurring and very offensive put the address of the offending site into your host file ... they will never find where you have stopped them! ;D
Otherwise invest in a "Net Nanny" programme. ;)
Try subtlety first! I added insult to injury when I kept one of the less pornographic pics and put it up as wallpaper just before they used my computer.... you can imagine the look when they realised that I knew exactly what was happening with my computer! ::)

I don't know what a host file is. Does this mean they will not get to go to those websites again, like putting a parental lock on the television? (me laughing with devilish glint in eyes....Wa ha ha ha!)

It is easier for you to Google "host file" than to try and explain how to get there, if you are like me you need 'step by step' instructions ;D
The first site at the top of the list is "blocking Parasites with a Hosts File".
When they try to go to the site a screen appears that says "this page cannot be displayed" ;D
Just as if the site is 'down'!

Fedette meant when you setup your hosts file to loop the bad website back to 127.0.0.1.
IE: 127.0.0.1 www.badwebsite.com
Your browser will give the "this page cannot be displayed" response.

I am having trouble opening this program on my computer. The website even has a step by step page explaining what to do,
but when I do what it says, I see no "extract all" on any menu. I must be doing something wrong, but cannot figure out what it is. (Hence my handle, computerilliterate)
Can someone help, please?

Windows XP should have a extract all feature if you open the folder if you do not have windows XP then get winzip or winrar. winrar i better it does more extensions. For Winzip and winrar whatever just select extact to and pick a location..
What step are you on anyway?

I have windows ME.
I saved the file in my desktop as the directions said just to see if it would work, but when I get to the part where it says from your desktop, right click and select: Extract all from the menu....I'm stumped.
what is winzip or winrar?

When I right click on it, "Extract all" is not even on the list! I must be doing something wrong.Maybe I should try to download it to my documents or something instead of my desktop.

computerilliterate..... Odd ......could you take a screen shot of your desktop ...showing the file that you can't unzip or open ........and post it here .
To do that ........ go to your desktop and simply push the print screen key .....then click start /Programs/Accessories/system tools/Paint ......then open paint , click edit .......then select paste ...........Now you should have the pic of your sceen ........click file ......then save as ........give it a name and save it to the desktop ....... Now come back to the forum ......... type your message and the use the brouse button to navigate to the pic you saved and attach it .....
It should now appear in your post as an attachment .....

It won't let me attach it to the post. it said the "Attachment is approximately 1157 kilobytes too large"
If I am too much trouble, please don't bother with me. I don't want to waste anyone's valuable time with nonsense.
I'll just muddle through on my own. Eventually, I end up figuring things out for myself anyway.

You can use shift-print screen to capture only the active window instead of the complete desktop. Then save the image as a .gif or .jpg to make the file size smaller. You can also resize the original image (as long as it remains readable) and resave it to make file size smaller.
