Title: One specific internet website not working...
Post by: munkeh on January 25, 2006, 08:15:05 PM
Hi all,

I am new here, my name is Ellis.

Since September 2005, i cannot access this one very site...

www.compbuy.co.uk

I have no idea why, i been researching on the problem for the past 2 weeks... i cleaned my temp. internet files, i scanned my PC for virus's etc... with spydoctor, ad-aware and some other software, cleaned it out and yet i still cannot access the website.

Everytime i try to visit the site, it takes me to "The page cannot be displayed" or "We can't find "www.compbuy.co.uk" on the msn search page.

I tried to access the website through google and yahoo trying to get through to the site though links and not by the main page, still no luck, same errors still happen.

I talked to the admin. about the website and it seems to be running fine, i am the only one who cannot access the website. I tried accessing it through the university PC's and it works fine there.

I just don't know what the problem is :-?

Help! >:(

Thanks all!

Regards

Ellis

A Chinese music site? Oh well, whatever blows up your skirt. :D
Copy & paste the site address into your trusted sites.
IE>Tools>Internet Option>Security
Also check your hosts file to make sure your mother didn't loop it in there.
Also check your restricted sites to make sure there is no entry in there either.

I forgot to mention i added the site to trusted sites, still doesn't work. In restricted sites, there are no sites in the list.

What do you mean check my hosts file... how do i check that?

Also used firefox to open the site, still gives me the same problem.

Shall i run hi-jack this and paste the results here?

Cheers for the reply.

You will find your hosts file here
C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\hosts
Open it with wordpad or something and check for an entry like
127.0.0.1      www.compbuy.co.uk

By all means post a Hijackthis log, every bit helps.

Checked the host files, nothing in there that says "www.compbuy.co.uk"

Ran a Hijack this and here's the log:

First delete links.exe, it should be in the C:\WINDOWS\system32\ directory, if it gives you any trouble use KillBox to delete it.

Then run Hijackthis and mark the following for removal, click the fixit box then re-boot when finished.

Install some antivirus & antibadware protection.

1) Ping the site. ping w w w.compbuy.co.uk <enter> from a dos prompt
2) Check with your ISP to make sure they don't have that site blocked. (It happens)

What information should tell me the site is working fine or not working fine from the ping information given on dos prompt?

I'll check with NTL today about if they blocked the site.

Thanks for your help!

munkeh....... Just looking at your last hijackthis log and it looks like you have a trojan causing this issue ....... IF after removing what Fed has suggested ...the issue is still present ..... I would suggest you try this ......

D/l the trial version of Ewido ( it's a fully functional 14 day trial ) then get the latest updates ...... http://www.download.com/Ewido-Security-Suite/3000-8022_4-10326287.html ..... Then reboot into SAFE mode , Make sure system restore is turned off.
Do you have more than one user account on this machine?

If you do , I would run a full anti-virus scan AND a Ewido scan on each of your user accounts ......... Delete anything found ........ then please post a new hijackthis scan when your finished .

Safe mode takes quite a while to load, it shouldn't but it does :-?
What happens in normal mode?

Normal mode is fine but safe mode takes absolutely ages and still nothing! I left it on for 10 mins to wait and see if the HDD light responds, nothing. All i see on the screen is the words "safe mode" and what windows am i running on the top of the screen, it doesn't go any further from there. :-[

Since i can't get into safe mode, i ran Ewido in normal mode while the system restore is turned off, got rid of what ever it scanned, rebooted my laptop, turned back on system restore and i still can't get onto the website :-?

I am assuming you are using XP to run the desktop icons and start menu in safemode if it doesnt run manually {ctrl+alt+delete) File-> newtask-> browse C:/windows and look for explorer.exe to run that should load your desktop but check to see if it is running on the process tree first
