Title: Comp. restarts everytime I plug my external drive
Post by: mistamoo on January 26, 2006, 07:53:39 PM
Hey, I have windows xp professional w/ service pack 2 and my external hard drive is a western digital 300gb which i partioned into 2 seperate drives of around 145gb each. My external hard drive is antec nexstar 3. Everytime I plug in my external in to the usb drive, my computer would detect it and then restart. I know it's not my usb port because when i plug my computers usb in, my computer doesnt restart. After my computer restarts and goes back to windows, it has a error message saying the error was unknown device driver. Any help would be grateful. Thanks in advance

I would try that drive on another computer or two and see if it functions appropriately.

What is your computer make/model?

The power supply is ATX 350W and I have 2 drives currently running on it, a 80gb and a 30gb. I have a CD burner and a DVD Burner and a floppy drive.

If it is not a name brand power supply, or if  the current is not enough, that may be enough extra to cause this problem. What kind of graphics card? Do you have a known working more powerful PSU to test with?

I have a ATI radeon 9600 XT and i dont have a higher psu to test with but I dont think thats the problem because I unplugged one of my hard drive and tested it again and it still happened? Do you think it has something to do with the drivers?

NVM got it but it still restarts with this stop error blue screen message:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
The problem seems to be caused by the following file: Sysdrv.sys.

PAGE_FAULT_IN_NON_PAGED_AREA

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufactuer for any windows updates you might need.

Technical information:
***Stop:0x00000050 (0x9672633E, 0x00000000, 0xFD518B2, 0x00000000)
***Sysdrv.sys- Address F7D518B2 base at F7D51000, Date Stamp 4021c60f

(This might help and I have downloaded all the recent windows updates) Thanks a lot ppl

From the web:

"I would like add something to this issue.
Stop code 50, happens in many situations by accessing
a bad pointer.  If this bad pointer is generated by
your file filter driver then you need to find out
that.  Since you mention that it works on the other
machines, I say , you run checkdisk on your compaq
drives if they are NTFS partitions ie. Chkdsk /f /r.
The stop 50 also occurs by accessing corrupt NTFS
volumes. The symptomps may be driver crashing with
stop code 50 at different points(src line) at
different times."
