Does anyone know how to backup e-mail in Outlook Express 6? I have Windows XP Home Edition software. I tried using some instructions I
found on the Microsoft.com website, but I'm still having trouble doing a
backup. I'm going to do a full system restore on my PC, so I want to
backup everything before hand. I would appreciate any help.
Thank you.

GX1_Man,

The instructions did not work out too well.

jimbob338.....ok , lets see if my instructions are any better .......
open outlook express
RIGHT click on the IN Box and choose ..... properties ....... then the IN Box properties box will come up....... You will see ..........
This folder contains ( ???) messages. then below that ....
This folder is stored in the following file.
Then you will see part of the pathway .......
C:\Documents and settings\Your computers name\Application Data\Identities
\{6918FA7B-20C1-487B-B19F-0AD3CB93BEDE} this is my file (yours may be differant )\Microsoft\Outlook Express \Inbox.dbx
open Inbox.dbx and copy it and save it somewhere ....
Then do the same thing with the Sent folder ..... and again once you get to it , you want to save ....... Sent Items.dbx
The address book , search for a file called WAB ......... ( save it , thats all your addresses . )
One more thing ...... before you start the above procedure ........ Go to control panel ........ and click on folder options ..... then click the view tab ...... now scroll down until you see SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS put a tick in the circle in front of that statement ...... Now click apply and ok
Now go and save your info.
Dont forget to record your outlook express set up info ...as you will have to recreate your Email account .

I first created a folder called Outlook Express. Then I used Tools/Options and clicked on the Maintenance tab and clicked on Store Folder and used the Change Location button to direct it to the Outlook Express folder I had created. Now backing up is a matter of just copying this folder to a safe place.
Address book Wab files can be exported there too.

Thank you, dl65 and GX1_Man. I'll give your suggestions a try.

The instructions worked very well for me.
What problem you had with it?
-
I remember the e-mail folder icons looking corrupted, and getting a message
asking what program created them when I tried to open a folder.

This may sound dumb, but how do you retrieve your e-mail and address book
once you've saved them? I saved my Inbox by copying it, and then pasting it
to Wordpad. When I opened it, I got the following: C:\Documents and Settings\My computer name\Application Data\Identies\{998h7292-C005-B5FE-BA8E8059F103}\Microsoft\outlook Express\Inbox.dbx.
Sorry, I quess I need someone to take me by the hand on this one.
