Title: memory

 Question can't find answer to.  Any help appreciated.  I want to take memory out of one Dell 4600 and use both sticks in dell 4500.  Currently memory is similar with the speeds different.  So, can I use the 2 - 256MB PC2700  333 MHz and replace them with the 1 - 256MB  PC2100 266 MHz that is currently in my Dell 4500.  Dell 4600 will no longer be used, but I would like to utilize the memory.  Can't find any answers on using existing (not new) memory.  Looking to upgrade with spare parts.  Any reason this won't work?  Thanks

I think I'm missing the point here. Can you clarify what you intend to do?

I intend to remove the current memory from my computer and install 2 memory cards which I have taken out of another computer.  This would be an upgrade to 512MB using the only two memory slots I have in my computer.  I have installed "new" memory before, but never replaced current memory with "used memory".  As long as the 2 memory cards I intend to use are equal in speed and fit my computer does it matter that they are used?  Is it even worth considering this action.  Could this create problems?  Thanks

It will not create a problem IF the motherboard supports the memory. Faster memory may not be supported but slower memory generally will be as long as it is the same memory type.

Go to  www.crucial.com and see what the exact specs for the memory you need are in the upgrading Dell. Then check the memory specs for what you are trying to put in there and see if it is an exact match and is compliant with the motherboard per the crucial site. Dells can be particular. (So can others!)

Thanks for useful help (especially 2k_dummy).  I checked it out and found out my motherboard will not accept the higher speed memory stick.  You lead me in the right direction to get the information I needed to make a decision.  Therefore, I have to open the wallet to update and get the correct speed memory.  I really appreciate your help with something that seemed simply, but I could not find an answer without paying for it.
