Why is my computer super fast when started in safe mode and slow in normal mode?

Safe mode doesn't load things like backgrounds, video drivers, sounds drivers (actually, any drivers), etc. It won't even allow for an internet connection, I believe. That's what takes normal mode so long to load; it's loading all that good stuff.
