Have you been monkeying around inside the case? If it used to work and you haven't touched anything inside, download the free diagnostics from the appropriate maker's web site. It creates a bootable floppy to test the drive.

It has to be seen correctly in the BIOS before software can touch it however.  ;)

Check jumpers on drives, data cables and power connectors. Did you change the order of the drives, add a new one, etc.?

You might want to download and run Everest Home. It will give you ALL the information on your machine in a nice little log file in HTML or .txt

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

My first guess is that the IDE cable is not making good contact with the motherboard, is bad, or the primary IDE channel is shot.

Post more info and we'll see. Check those connections!  ;)

ok i got it working and i installed all the drivers for everything. But now after like 1hr30min of making sure everything worked up to speed. The computer turned itself off and now it turns on and makes a beep noise when it turns on but the monitor says plz check signal cable.

The monitor works on other computers, but the same thing happens when i try another monitor.

any suggestions?

First, what solved the first original problem?

Is the video onboard or an add-in card? If a card, it may need tot be reseated. The video out plug could also not be making sufficient contact. What did you learn from Everest?
