Title: Internet Explorer shutting down
Post by: steptoe on June 24, 2006, 02:09:20 PM
Hi.  I am new here so I hope I do this right.  My internet explorer runs fine but shuts down (times out?) after about 3 hours of use. I have to re-boot the computer to get the internet back up and running.  I have Windows XP and a cable modem installed.  I contacted the cable co. and they say the problem is not with them.  Can anyone help please?  Thanks

Your ISP is _____? Your virus and spyware protection is _____? Has it always been this way? If not, when did it start and what preceeded it? Are you the only user of this machine? Have you changed any internet settings? Are you using a firewall? Router? Does it always work right until you approach this 3 hour mark? Is it exactly 3 hours? Every time?

More details needed.  ;)

My ISP is Cable One, the local cable company.  Virus protection is AVG.  Spyware is Spybot and Ad-aware.  Yes it seems to be on a timed basis.  I don't know exactly how long but about 3 hours is all I get.  I am hooked directly to a cable modem.  I also am using Zone Alarm.  There are 3 accounts on my personal computer,  myself, wife, and the grandkids.  No-one has downloaded anything that I know of or made any changes to the internet settings.  The computer runs perfect except for this problem. The cable company made some updates about the same time all this started.  I am stumped and don't know what to do except keep re-booting every time the internet quits.  Does this make sense?   Thanks again

Just to be sure you could download and run Hijack This for the experts here to examine for nasties. When you post the logfile, it will take several posts to include it all, and you must include it all.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html

Since this happened about the same time as the cable company's changes, that makes it suspect. However correlation does not necessarily indicate causation.

Do you have to reboot the machine, or just shut down and restart Internet Explorer?

Ok.  I ran Highjack This and I hope I am sending it as an attachment.

You attatched the hijack this program. We need the log file. You can just post it in separate posts if you'd prefer.

How do I send the log?  I do not know how to cut and paste.

Read  here:

or here:

It will take several posts to get it all.

OK.  I re-ran hijackthis and removed the entries suggested.  However, the item "wildtangent" does NOT exsist in my add/remove programs.  I ran a search and it is not there either. It did show up again on the hijackthis log.  The web site you suggested "w2ww.pchell.com/support/wildtangent.shtmi"  was no help either.  It said to delete the program thru my control panel Add/Remove programs also.  What do I do now?  Delete it from the hijack log?   Help please.  Thanks again

Just run the following online scans, if they come up clean I wouldn't worry about wildtangent as the jury is still out on it.

Online Virus Scan and Spyware Scan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm

Highly recommended second Online Malware Scan
http://www.ewido.net/en/

I don't think your problem is being caused by malware.

Well I have run Spybot, Ad-aware, CCleaner, SuperAntispyware, and Error Doctor.   I got this from running Spybot----"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\BTIEIN"  (This was titled Huntbar: Global Setting,  Registry Key)  Spybot could NOT remove it.  Can you help?  Could this be what is causing IE to shut down (time out) on a regular basis?

Run cwshredder, scroll down to find it.

I downloaded CWShredder, Windows Malicious Software Removal, and Windows Defender.  Windows Defender found some spyblast adware and removed it.  Nothing finds that Huntbar Registry problem except Spybot Search and Destroy and it can't remove it.   Oh I disconnected the cable from the wall, and ran all of the programs I could in ---Safe Mode.   What now?

I went to the lava help article you sugested and the first thing it requires is to remove the infection from the account that created it.  I have 4 accounts on this computer and have NO idea which one allowed this infection.  What now? :-?

I would try running adaware from all 4 accounts.
