Title: need help w/ major cpu problem
Post by: Supernaut17 on July 05, 2006, 03:14:24 PM
A few days ago I was running ad-aware and half way through the scan the program froze up.  I tried running the program multiple other times but each time it stopped working at the same point during the scan.  I tried uninstalling/reinstalling but there was an error.  Whenever I try installing the program it feezes up when the window that says checking computer for previously installed components comes up.  Also AVG virus scan stopped working correctly, it usually freezes halfway through just like ad-aware.  A couple times it read complete test no virus found but I am sceptical about that diagnosis.  Everytime I re-booting my computer things seemed to get worse.  Major slowdowns were occuring and windows freezing became common.  When I boot up windows it is now at the point where almost every program doesn't work.  I'll click on the start button on the toolbar and nothing will happen.  When I click on internet explorer nothing happens, it just hangs there.  There have been a few instances where I've been able to get on to the internet for a few minutes but it freezes up pretty quickly.  I tried starting my computer up in safe mode and windows seemed to be working properly however the virus scans/ad-aware programs still didn't work.  After rebooting and going back into safe mode I was having the same exact problems when not in safe mode.  I'm thinking this must be a virus and I guess it has now spread to safe mode.  Windows does not work for me at all anymore basically, if anyone can give me some suggestions about what I can do it would be greatly appeciated.

I am unable to do a system restore because I never made backups.
System Specs:
Windows 2000
Pentium 4 CPU 2.80GHz
Asus Motherboard P4P800-E Deluxe
system memory-1024MB
ATI Radeon 9600
Is there anything else I can try?  Thanks for responding

no turn it off because some viruses worms and spyware sometimes hide in the system restore files.. so turn it OFF go into safe mode and run all of the scans.

oh your computer automatically creates restore points they might not be the best but they are they..

Could you tell me how to turn off the restore files? I'm a novice when it comes to this stuff.
