Title: cannot open any document in MS Word 2000
Post by: dorothyroeder on July 25, 2006, 12:34:03 PM
Am using Windows 98 and Word 2000.
I can't even open a blank document. I get a message "WinWord caused an invalid page fault in module WINWORD.EXE..."
When I close that box I get a message that there are missing or corrupted files.
Tried restarting several times.
I tried using the installation CD to correct program errors. Didn't help. Then I uninstalled and reinstalled WORD from the CD. Didn't help.
Didn't find anything helpful at Support.microsoft, but maybe I don't know what to ask for. "invalid page fault" didn't provide info that worked.

Help anybody?

Based on this and your other problems, it may just be time for a complete format and reinstall of WIndows and Office or Word, whichever you have. Sometimes too much monkeying can FUBAR a whole installation, and if just uninstalling Word didn't get it.....

I agree with GX1_MAN but, first, try this.  Find your normal.dot file and delete it.  Normal.dot is a template file that holds all the default settings for new Word documents.  If it becomes corrupt, as it sometimes does, it will cause problems.  And, I think your uninstalling Word may not have removed it.  And if so, then your reinstalled Word is still looking at the same normal.dot file it was using before you uninstalled Word.

So, search for normal.dot and delete it.  Then restart Word and see whether the problem is solved.

Edit: Microsoft recommends renaming normal.dot rather than deleting it.  This way, if normal.dot is not the cause of the problem, you can reverse the name change and resume using your old normal.dot, which can be helpful if you had certain preferences set that you did not want to lose.

Here's the reference: How to reset user options and registry settings in Microsoft Office Word 2003, Microsoft Word 2002, and Microsoft Word 2000 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822005/)

I tried renaming Normal.dot but it wouldn't let me. I think I got through it from "Find". I can't figure out how to get to it from Explorer.

I can reinstall Windows if nothing else works.

How were you doing it in the Find window?  You should be able to rename it from the Find window.  Just right click on it and select Rename, or click on it and hit F2.  What happens when try that?

I went to find, typed in normal.dot and got a Word file called Normal in  Windows\ap... I right clicked, changed it to oldNormal and clicked again. I always get a box that says "cannot rename normal; access is denied.

F2 doesn't do anything.

I printed out all the stuff about the registry. Will have to do that later.

I can't rename normal.dot or delete any registry keys. I get the "write protected "message. I turned off Norton but that didn't help.
IIf I uninstall windows will I loose all my drivers and stuff. Will I still be able to get the old updates? I know there aren't any more new ones?
Title: Re: cannot open any document in MS Word 2000

Yes, you can still get the old updates. They are just not issueing new security updates as of this month. You may want to look in device manager and write down all of your devices and even hunt for the drivers now and burn to a CD. What are the specifics of the machine? You can also download and run Everest Home (for free) create a report and save it to a floppy AND post it here for perusal. You will know everything about the components and this will make finding the drivers easier.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

A format and reinstall seems like the wisest course of action. Have you ever done this before? Be sure and back up any important data files first, of course.  ;)

I wiped the disk and releaded everything last summer. The first time I had a worm. I can't remember what I did the second time. Seems like the hardest part, except for downloading all that stuff on a dial-up, was getting the modem set up.

My CD player wasn't working I thought, but if I start it from "My Computer", D: it seems to be O.K. I will make the list from the link you provided. I don't have a CD burner.

I have a Dell Dimension XPS T800. I added Ram a while back and have 656 MB now. Will I have to do the bios update over? I suppose so.

Leave the BIOS alone! That does not have to be done with a software reload. What version is it?
Title: Re: cannot open any document in MS Word 2000
Post by: dorothyroeder on July 25, 2006, 08:43:16 PM
I have no idea what version. I asked Dell tech support why I didn't see any improvement in performance with more RAM and he said I had to update the bios. I went to the link he gave me. Didn't see much change in performance while the printer was working.

I did the Everest scans. Which report did you want to see?

The system summary.

What Dell model is it? You should see the BIOS version when you boot, usually just under the Dell logo. It would be very strange to have a BIOS affect RAM. How much originally and how much did you add?
Title: Re: cannot open any document in MS Word 2000
Post by: dorothyroeder on July 25, 2006, 11:13:50 PM
The info on boot up says PhoenixBios 4.0  Release 6.0.
I got part of the number underneath,  4S4EB2XO.......
The info in system setup says    Bios -A05.

I originally had 125 MB RAM. I add two 256  chips.

It is a Dell Dimension XPS T700.

I can't attach the report. the program doesn't like the file type evidently.

For the ram thing i think i might be able to help you.

When you have one Stick of old Ram it sets the Speed of Ram for the Computer,

So if you have one Stick of PC133, and you Add 2 Sticks of PC166

It sets them All to Run at PC133, if i were you i would take out the 128 chip and just have the 2 512's
I'm Pretty Sure that happens on Dimm's , i don't know if that happens on DDR, DDR2 or Rambus

Copy Paste the Report in to the Forum , that should work

Lots of people post those reports. Save it as a txt file rather than HTML. Just copy and paste, but it may take 2 posts.

128MB is a fairly hefty amount of RAM for most Win98 systems.  Adding one 256 module would have been more than adequate for an increase in memory.  Going up to 640 MB was overkill.

Win98 can have stability issues with more than 512MB of RAM.  But, it can be tweaked to work fine with more than 512MB of RAM.  A Google find: Maximum RAM for Windows 98 (http://groups.google.com/group/microsoft.public.win98.gen_discussion/msg/ae9352a75d366218?q=Maximum+ram+for+Windows+98&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&rnum=1).  You could just remove the 128MB module, leaving your system at 512MB.

They probably didn't do a BIOS update. They most likely adjusted the virtual memory settings so it would run at all with RAM >512 meg.

I have MS Word back and working. I couldn't figure out how to uninstall Win.98. I think last time I was really frustrated and wiped the disk again. So anyway I installed it over what was already there and it seems to have helped. Except now I can't play CD's. I haven't figured out which CD has the driver the computer is looking for.

I took out the 125 MB RAM chip. Things seem to be faster. Thanks for that and the reference anyway. I won't try to add more. I got the 256's on Ebay so they were really cheap, but good.

I reseated the graphics card while I was in there, but still have black lines running across my screen. I didn't really think I was going to get around having to buy a new card. It just goes on.

This didn't solve the problem. It is looking for a joystick plug in which I don't have or want. Actually I don't have any windows sounds or anything. I selected a start-up sound but that doesn't play.

Have you checked to see whether sound is set as muted?  Open your volume control panel to check.

I go to Programs, Acessories, Entertainment and Volume and get nothing. Doesn't help to Rt click. Then I click open and get nothing.

I'm sure it is something as simple as that but I can't figure it out.

The joystick, etc. search it is doing is to load all of the orrect drivers for the card. It has a joystick port, whether you plan on using it or not. It may be asking for your Windows CD to install things correctly. Let it have it's way. Make sure you reboot after it is through.

Do you have onboard sound that needs to be turned off in the BIOS? I believe that model has a Yamaha chip on it, and having two sound devices active causes trouble.

I tried again to update the Creative SB Live driver from the Windows CD. Bychoosing browse I find this under D:\drivers\audio -

acer, aureal, creativity, cyrix ensonig, ess, neomagic, opti, index.

The first is supposed to be the normal procedure it says.

DRIVER UPGRADE PROCEDURE.

Use this procedure for upgrading or replacing the existing audio driver
in your system:

Go to your desktop (click the desktop icon in the task bar)

Right click on "My Computer" icon.

When the pulldown menu appears, (left) click on "Properties"

The System Properties page appears. Click on the Device Manager tab.

Scroll to the bottom and locate "Sound, video and game controllers".

Click on the "+" to the left of the icon to expand. If already expanded,
there will be a "-" instead.

Select the device you wish to upgrade and click the "Properties" button.

The driver properties page will appear. Please click the driver tab.

Click on the "Update Driver" button.

The "Update Device Driver Wizard" will appear.

Read message and then click the "Next" button.

Under "What do you want Windows to do?" choose the option that says
"Search for the best driver for your device." (will be the option
      selected by default).
      Then click the "Next" button.

Place a check in the Check-box beside "Specify a location:" and remove
      check-marks from all other check-boxes.

Specify the path to the new driver and then click the "Next" button.

Example 1: Insert the drivers disk in the A: floppy drive,
                     and enter A:\.

Example 2: Type in the name of the directory where you copied
the drivers, either on your local hard drive or
                     on a network share.

Example 3: If you're not sure exactly where the drivers are,
choose the "Browse..." button are find them.

I am fine down to inserting the A: floppy, and browse just takes me back to the beginning.
Put in the Dell resource disc \drivers, but it didn't find anything there that it wanted.

The only way I know to get to bios is in setup. There is one option for Plug &Play O/S. The book says to use no.

That seems odd, since all Windows OS since Windows 95 have supported Plug and Play.  Has that setting always been set on No?  Have you tried setting it to Yes?

It says, "Leave this option set to  No  so the BIOS handles all Plug and Play operation."

At first it sounded like the opposite of that to me also until I read further.

I went to the Creative website and used their auto download analyzer. It said I have everything I should.

there must be some other place where sound is switched on or off?

Well, sometimes the most basic points need to be reviewed.  Do your speakers have their own power switch?  If so, are they turned on?  Do your speakers have their own volume control?  IF so, have you tried adjusting it?

Are you absolutely sure your speakers are connected to the right connector on your computer? If your computer originally had onboard sound and you later added a sound card, you'll have two sets of connectors for speakers, mic, line in, etc.  The onboard set would not work if onboard sound is disabled in the BIOS.

I checked all that first thing. Nothing has changed. I have added nothing to the original setup except the RAM. The light in the speaker controls knob is lit.

It is fixed. I called Dell. They still helped even though the warranty has long ago expired. This time when I looked at the devices an unknown one had appeared. Don't know where it was hiding. I sure didn't see it before. Anyway I installed it and now I have sound.

My only remaining problem is the font installation.

All Dell bad-mouthers should note this post!

Again, the part after the joystick installation that baffled you was the key.
