My problem is related to MP3 files. When I right click on a file, select 'Properties', and choose the 'Summary' tab, I don't have all the options in the Advanced fields? I can only enter basic info, such as "Track Number, Title and Comments". Why can I no longer change other field that have always been available to me in the Advanced settings (such as Album Title, Year, Genre, etc.)?? Oh, and the files are NOT read-only. I'm stumped.. Anyone have any ideas?? I would greatly appreciate it.
PS - this problem just occurred today for the very first time. Been making MP3 files for years, with no problems until today. I tried to do a System Restore to get this capability back, but the system wouldn't restore. I tried 3 different dates (1, 2, and 4 days ago) and none of these worked.
Thanks in advance for your help.

You may have other issues. Are you free of malware? Any recent updates, other system changes? What are you using for protection? SP2 and all updates?
-
I have the "automatic" Windows update feature enabled. And yes, I have SP2 installed. I ran Sbybot today and it found a few things, which I deleted, but nothing major.
-
And of course I have Norton Anti-Virus protection installed.
-
And I don't seem to have any other computer problems, BUT this.... At least none that I'm aware of at this point in time. But this just happened today and I've not had much time to play on the PC today.
-
Just for grins try the Panda online virus scan.
http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan.htm
-
OK, will do right now... Will let you know the results.
-
According to the scan, just spyware and potentially unwanted tools. Doesn't sound like anything major. But I'll let you decide. The results are as follows:

These two things are mutually exclusive.
-
What should I do then? Do you think this Spyware is causing my problem?
-
Get rid of it first and see if that resolves the issue.
-
well I got rid of these files and I still have the same problem. Any other suggestions? This is driving me crazy.
Thanks for you help, by the way.
-
How did you get rid of them?
What software were you referring to in your original post?
-
I got rid of these files by deleting the temporary internet files and cookies through Internet Explorer.
The software problem is with Windows Explorer, most specifically "My Music". I have lost the ability to edit the file properties of my MP3 files. When I right click on an MP3, go to properties, then to the Summary tab, I am unable to modify anything but what is on the simple page (Track Number, Title and Comments). The Advance tab is grayed out. I can NOT modify or add the Artist, Album Title, Year, etc. Nor can I view these items when I'm in the "My Music" folder. The only things that show up in My Music folder are File Name, size, date, and type. The headers are there for the other fields I have chosen (artist, album title, etc), but the data does not appear. It's weird.
-
Eh, better take a closer look at where you stand. MyWebSearch isn't going to be removed by merely deleting the temporary internet files and cookies through Internet Explorer. Read this: Fun Web Products "My Web Search" Removal Instructions and Help (http://www.pchell.com/support/mywebsearch.shtml).
And, as far as the music goes, I have some music on my computer and I also can NOT modify or add the Artist, Album Title, Year, etc. via Windows Explorer. So, I'm very skeptical that that can be done via Windows Explorer.
Edit: I do not see a way to do it even with Windows Media Player. I can do such tasks with with the software that came with my mp3 player.
-
I don't mind "MyWebSearch", as I've had it for a while now, so I don't think it is the cause of my problem. But you are right, I did not uninstall that.
That's odd that you've never been able to edit your MP3 files through Windows Explorer. To me this is the preferred method of doing so, as you can edit an entire album or artist at once. To me, it's much easier than doing it with the MP3 player software (winamp, musichmatch, i-tunes, etc.). But that's all personal preference and I'm not here to debate that. But no need to be skeptical, because Windows Explorer does have this capability, as I have used it to modify MP3 files for years. Believe me, it DOES work. Not sure about Windows Media Player, as I would never use that program for MP3's.
Anyway, if anyone knows what I'm talking about (which I think it debatable at times), I would still appreciate some help in this area. I miss the unlimited capabilities of using Windows Explorer to edit my MP3 ID3 tag info.
-
This won't be a Windows Explorer feature by default, I don't think. I suspect it's a properties page plugin - perhaps Windows Media Player comes with this plugin? Unfortunately I'm not sure where it originates from, but this knowledge may help you in your search. i.e. Google "MP3 ID3 properties Windows Explorer plugin" or something like that.
-
Thanks for the info Rob. I don't ever remember downloading a plugin to be able to modify my MP3 tags, but maybe I did years ago. Memory seems fade over time. Anyway, I did the Google search and found a couple options (Mp3tag by nonags, Audio Shell, Total Commander, etc.). Audio Shell looked most promising, and it said it would show the ID tag info in Explorer, but it didn't work. I can still see the headers for Title, Album Title, Artist, Duration, etc., but they are still blank. Phooey...
Are there any you'd recommend? Or do you think there is something that is keeping Audio Shell from working as advertised on my PC?
BTW, thanks for your help and suggestion.
-
Out of curiousity, I checked my wife's laptop to see if I could see the ID tag info in her Windows Explorer. And I'll be damned, it works on her PC just like it used to work on my PC. And she said she has not installed any plugins (which she would not even know how to do - sorry Dear, but you know that's true). Anyway, this whole things just baffles me. It's a feature I like to use, and have used to manage my collection for years, and I don't understand what happened that caused me to lose this data. This just frustrates the *censored* out of me..
-
Exactly which version of Windows is installed on your computer and your wife's computer?
-
Try these:
http://www.iprogramdev.com/soft.php/File-Properties-Changer-397.htm
http://easytag.sourceforge.net/
-
The version of XP on my wife's PC is the same as mine. Which is Home Edition Version 2002, with Service Pack 2. And her Windows Explorer functions the same way mine used to. In fact she talked today to the company that services the computers where she works, and that guy said that you should be able to view all these details of an MP3 file in Windows Explorer (My Music). He said you didn't need a plug-in. He thinks there is something on my PC that is messing with the setting and causing it not to display properly. So I'm not sure what to do. Should I try the "Hijack This" site and see if there is something on my system? Would anybody be willing to help me out if I post the results?
Again, thanks for everybody's help on this matter. I really appreciate everybody taking the time to offer suggestions. God knows I need them.
-
Sure, go ahead and do that AFTER you run all of your scans in Safe Mode with System Restore turned off.
What are you using for protection?
-
I am using Norton Anti virus for protection, with the autmoatic updates feature turned ON. Also, I have automatic update feature turned on Windows updates too.

Again, any help or insight would be appreciated.

Howard,
Did you download Microsofts service pack 2 to your wifes computer? When I downloaded SP2 I have noticed several programs not functioning properly. Media player will no longer burn CD's when you click on burn it starts inspecting and that is where it stays. If you did not download the SP2 to your wifes computer you may want to try to remove it from yours then see what happens. As soon as I get another problem resolved with Microsoft I plan on removing SP2. I have already stopped the automatic updates from Microsoft. I think it is best if I choose what to download and not Microsoft

4 full posts just may be the record. 2 posts full of Logitech stuff, add on toolbars. I would streamline it, but the experts will be along shortly.
-
Yes, I did downlaod Service Pack 2 to my wife's PC. But I thought I might go ahead and uninstall it anyway, then I got this message "if Service Pack 2 is removed, these programs may not run properly. Do you want to continue?" The list associated with this message showed about 50-60 programs, maybe more. So I chickened out and didn't do it. I know, I have no guts...
I wondered if 4 full posts may be a sign of problems. UGH!!! The Logitech thingys are for this optical mouse I got for Xmas. Wonder why so many entries just for this????? I'm certainly no expert, but that does seem a little excessive, doesn't it? Hmmmm.... Not sure how to streamline it, other than to get rid of it. But maybe the experts will have some suggestions....

I have a Logitech wireless mouse/keyboard combo. I just ran HijackThis and I only have 3 items for Logitech. They all appear to be related to Logitech's SetPoint software, which I have installed.
I suggest you download CCleaner (http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4191) and run the Issues scan with it. Then, run HijackThis and see if most of those Logitech entries have disappeared.

I don't think this has anything to do with plug-in.
I has been doing the same thing as Howard has done all the while too.
It's not any special feature in Windows, it's just like any other simple thing you can do in Windows.
I've tried around and found that I also can do the same thing on .ogg and .mid files, but not .wav files.
Browse to any mp3 files on your PC, for instant C:\Program Files\Winamp\demo.mp3, right-click and choose Properties, there are two tabs Gerenal & Summary, click Advanced button, there you see the page with various properties and corresponding values of different field i.e. Music, Description, Origin and Audio where you can change the values.

Doesn't this is happening on most computers?
From all the response posted it make me feel this is an alien feature.
-
Howard, have you tried to reinstall you Windows?
-
Good idea... I will run CCleaner and see if that helps.
Michael - I have NOT tried to reinstall Windows, as I have actually tried to avoid it at all costs. I think about it, then I think of all the work that would involve. First of all, there would be lots of files to back up (which I know I should do anyway). Then... I would also have to reinstall all my software, re-establish my DSL internet connection, re-establish all my internet favorites, re-establish all my personal settings in all my programs, yadda yadda yadda.. I know that sounds like an excuse, but it just seems to me that this would be a major major project. Now maybe it wouldn't be, but it sure seems like it. I guess I'm looking for the easy fix... And I'd like to win the lottery too. And did I also mention, I'm lazy?
-
When you get around to reinstalling Windows and all of the updates, usual programs, etc., that would be an excellent time to get and install an imaging program. This will make future reinstalls take all of 10 minutes, instead of hours or days. ;)

-
I will have to read up on the imaging software, as that sounds like it will ease the pain.... Even a lazy guy like me can spare 10 minutes....
Well.... I ran "Hijack This" again, after I ran CCleaner and here are the results. And by the way, I still CAN'T see the MP3 file properties, so I guess my problem is still in there somewhere...

While a clean reinstallation will cost you too much work to do, what about a repair instead?
-
This probably will be a dumb question, but how do you do a repair???? I've never heard of that, but I must admit, I'm intrigued.

Thanks everyone for your help, it has been greatly appreciated. But someone on another site gave me a suggestion and it worked. And, for a lazy guy like me, it was the perfect fix. Since this may impact someone else along the line, I thought I would share the fix with everyone else. This guy had me do these steps:
Click on the Start Menu
Click on "Run"
Type this - regsvr32 shmedia.dll
Hit OK
And presto.... All my options on file properties have returned.... God love the simple fix.
Again, thanks everyone for ALL your great suggestion and tips.
-
shmedia.dll is a component of Windows Media Player, which as I recall >someone suggested< (http://www.computerhope.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?num=1154830343/15#16) might be the cause of this problem... ;D
Glad you got it sorted, and thanks for reporting back. :)
-
Rob, you are right, you did say it could be a problem with the Windows Media Player. I just didn't know what to do with Windows Media Player to fix it. Is that a component that you can uninstall and then reinstall? If so, that probably would have fixed it. Anyway, you were right about the source of the problem. But I still don't know what happened to my WMP that caused me to lose this "dll". Probalby will never know, but I'm just glad that I got it back.
Again, thanks for all your help and suggestions. To someone like me, who is NOT a technical expert in this field, and who gets easily frustrated by not being able to fix problems, it is such a relief to have someone like you willing to help us out... I would never hesitate to use this site again. Everyone here was so kind and helpful.

Heck, I was clutching at straws... :D
Thanks (on behalf of everyone) for the kind comments. Do visit again!
