I recently did a fresh install of windows 98 on a pc. There is no sound except for the PC beeper.
I went to Control Panel>Add new hardware and it detected "PCI Multimedia Audio Device" Which I understand is the generic term for an audio device which it doesn't recognise. I have onboard audio, but I have no idea what it is called. How do I find out and where can I get the drivers?
//Edit
I am running Windows 98 first edition
500mhz Celeron
62mb RAM
-
Do you have any details on the model of the PC or the motherboard?
-
no, sorry. Not without opening it up
-
Yours is a cloned combination and not any model by manufacturers like Dell/HP/Acer?
Do you have an internal voice modem?
-
Its a fairly old Tiny brand PC clone. Doesn't state if it is a specific model. I do have a PCI modem, but it has no output for sound.
-
Download Everest Home, run the report and post the contents of the file here. We can figure it out to get you fixed up. ;)

-
burnt everest onto a cd and used it, Under multimedia/audio it had:
//edit, sorry, typo;
Intel 82801AA I/0 controller hub AC'97 Audio Adapter [B-1]
now I know what it is, where can I ge a driver?
-
found a driver, now trying to get it to work...
-
OK, I used the driver I found here:
http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/drivers/130/130168.htm
And installed it, but it still doesn't work. Clicking multimedia in the control panel reveals that there are no sound devices detected, and when I click on Add New Hardware, The PCI Multimedia audo device now has a new name (something like crystalwave or something) has a new icon (A multimedia symbol)and is detected as new but uninstalled harware, becasue the driver has a problem. Windows recommends reinstalling the driver, which does not work.
Help!
-
Is that what I told you to do? No. If it is an onboard AC97 you have to locate the motherboard and use the drivers made for it. You did not post the motherboard model, or the report that was asked for, so we are stuck until you do. ::)
-
Sorry.

OK, well I see it is a Celeron motherboard with an i810 video adapter, very common for that era, but we still don't know the specific motherboard.
Try running Belarc Adviso (free at www.belarc.com) and see what is on the top right of the report page. It should have your motherboard listed there.
Post that screem here.
-
ok, Belarc Adviso gives the specific motherboard;
Board: Micro-Star Inc. MS-6178 1.0
Bus Clock: 66 megahertz
BIOS: American Megatrends Inc. 62710 05/20/99

The MSI site is slow right now, but you can stay after it until you get the right audio driver for that board. Here is the main download page:
http://www.msicomputer.com/support/TechSupport.asp
-
I cant find it...a search for my specific board turnns up nothing, but i dont know the name of the series.
-
Try here:
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/download/dld/spt_dld_detail.php?UID=116&kind=1
-
Ok, I wasn't sure what to download, so I downloaded the sound driver. It didnt look like mine but I fugured it was wirth a try, however, once I had downloaded it I tried to run it, I get a load of questionmarks where it looks like there should be text, and what looks like the install directory is listed as
C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
What should I do next? I'm at a loss....
-
That sound driver is the one listed for that motherboard model.
Check to see where you are downloading it to. Why not just make a new directory call Stuff and put it there?
-
ok, I extracted it to a new directory, and ran the setup file. An error message pops up saying
"Software not supported by this OS"
I downloaded the 9x/ME/2000/xp file, not the NT one.
-
Ive been searching for hours, I heard of the i810_audio driver, but can't find anywhere to download it. Intel support site does not have a generic AC '97 audio driver, I have to know the chipset of my board, how do I find out?
-

You already know the board.
-
Sorry for the late reply, I was away.
After looking closer, I see that intel only supports intel boards, and recommends going to the manufacturers website, which I already have but to no avail.
So, I have tried to directly contact MSI, they offered email address for sales (no) marketing (no) and website enquiries (no, but close enough)
So i have emailed the webmaster in a last ditch attempt to sort this out. This is the last driver I need to get my system completely functional and its taking the longest to find :(
-
ok, I got a reply, and after specifically asking for one that was compatible for windows 98 first edition, I go t the same one GX_1 linked me to which doesn't support it.
heeeeeeeelp
I shall be old and grey before I sort this out

Try www.driverguide.com
Registration is free and painless. Have all appropriate model numbers nearby.
-
This was the first place I looked. I'm not a member, but downloads are free if you choose to view a series of ads instead. I couldn't find anything for me
-

This may continue to be a problem for you.
-
Go here:
http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_detail.php?UID=116&kind=1
Scroll to bottom of page and try that driver (9x/me.....)
-
Thats the one that I was linked to.
I cant afford an upgrade of OS, but I was thinking I could get an old sound card that has support for windows 98?
he problem there would be finding one and a driver.
-
Recieved an email today after further correspondance with MSI;
Dear Matthew,
I believe you need at least Windows 98SE. We have some old driver CDs
around.
Please send a SAE to:
<address removed>
Please include a copy of this email with your letter. And we will post one
to you.
Progress, I suppose :)
-
I believe you need at least Windows 98SE. We have some old driver CDs around.
That is going to be a common problem with an OS that old. ;)
-
Tell me about it, but i make do, cos there's not much else I can do.
I'm fairly used to it, working with old computers.
-
Sent off for disk today, about 5 seconds after I put it in the letter box, I remembered that Royal Mail had changed their pricing system...I think the 1st class stamp I put on it barely covers it...We shall see!
-
Disks arrived today. Setup file gave error message saying that my OS wasn't compatible again! However, after some thorough browsing, I did manage to find the install file for a Realtek AC97 driver. It was the closest one on the disk, what with it holding hundreds of different drivers. Installed without a hitch, and I finally heard beautiful music out of my speakers!
Thankyou all for all your help. It is appreciated :)
