Title: Internet Keeps Disconnecting
Post by: fullbug on September 19, 2006, 03:12:36 PM
I'm not sure anyone can help me with this problem, my internet provider cant seem to, but will give it a shot....
Microsoft Windows XP Pro
Version 2002
Service pack 1
Intel Pentium 2 processor
400 MHz
128 MB of Ram
Just got a new laptop, so I ordered a wireless modem from Bell Sympatico, now the internet seems to log off every 10 minutes or so, sometimes closing the browser and restarting works, sometimes not and I have to reboot, this is starting to drive me crazy, I have been on the phone with Bell at least 10 times, the other night for two and a half hours, they seem to fix the problem and then an hour later it happens again, thats the reason I have been on the phone with them so much, I'm on a SpeedStream wireless 6520....
The laptop gets cut off the net sometimes, but not nearly as much, I have run tons of virus and malware scans, like Panda, Ewido, Adaware, Spybot, Anti-Virus, makes no difference, before I got the wireless modem I had zero problems connecting with the internet and staying connected, any suggestions? God knows Bell cant seem to fix the problem....

How far away is the Wireless sender? Is it a router or an Access point? Is there anything that could interfere with the signal?

How is the signal strength rated by Windows and the software you have installed?

Have you tried testing the wireless receiver on another laptop or closer to the router/AP to see if it is faulty?

Its right next to the computer....

Its a router, at least thats what Bell calls it, as far as anything interfering with the signal, not that I know of....

How is the signal strength rated by Windows and the software you have installed?

Wireless Internet Connection
Speed: 54.0 Mbps
Signal Strength: Excellent

Have you tried testing the wireless receiver on another laptop or closer to the router/AP to see if it is faulty?

No, dont have another laptop handy, according to Bell the Modem/Router is the best model they have....I am assuming the modem/router is in the same device, I'm a little vague on what the difference is between the two....

Bell telling you it is the best model they have doesn't necessarily mean that it is not damaged. You should test it in another Laptop.

You didn't answer all of my questions regarding signal, is the signal strength at an all time excellent? How far away from the router is your laptop and how many objects are between you and the laptop?

According to the icon in my system tray, the signal strength is 'Excellent', is says that on both computers, the router is 1 foot away from my laptop, and is right next to my normal computer, my normal computer is the one giving me the most problems....

Here is a window of my network settings box, not sure if that would help, I am going crazy with this problem....

Turn off what you don't need. Microsoft client for networks/properties.....disable log on to domain server. If you don't use file and printer sharing, uncheck it. You likely don't need Qos packet scheduling. That close to the wireless router, you might get a strong signal even cross channel. Make sure the card and router are set to the same channel.

How would I make sure the card and router are set to the same channel?
I'm not sure what you mean by disable log on to domain server, I'm still trying to learn this stuff...I disabled the Qos packet and printer and file sharing....Are you saying I dont need the Microsoft client for networks/properties turned on?

One more question, since I'm on wireless should this connections box be empty?

Ofcourse, you haven't got a Dial-up connection and neither do you have a Virtual Private Network.

Just checking, I am grasping at straws at this point....

Are both the computer and the laptop loosing their signal?

You should first verify that all your devices are using the same channel  as suggested by Dumm2yk (Refer to the Router and Wireless NIC card manual for more details on how to do so) and if so, try changing to a different channel. Perhaps someone nearby is transmitting on the same channel.

Click on the item and then properties. Uncheck log on to domain server. Changes made in network properties generally require a reboot to become effective.

The laptop cuts out sometimes, but nowhere near as much as my desktop is doing....
How do I refer to the router and wireless NIC card manual? I may have an idea how to do that, I will check that out....

Oh, that's quite easy, really. You just open the booklet that came with the router.  ;)

The information you need should be in there. If you haven't got the manual anymore, download it from the manufacturers website.

This is what the booklet says about my NIC card if I am asked for the correct one....
"Please select the Network card that you have connected to the Sympatico DSL modem with the Ethernet cable."
What the *censored* does that mean? I dont see anything on the modem and all it says on the ethernet cable is 'type cm 24awg 60 c (ul) E188630 csa ll81295 cmg"
I'm gonna call Bell a little later after I go out and ask them about it, if I call now I might just spend the time yelling at them....
Title: Re: Internet Keeps Disconnecting
Post by: Raptor on September 20, 2006, 02:25:33 PM
I wouldn't bother calling Bell.

The cable you have lying there is called an Ethernet cable.

Is this a modem with built in wireless function that has been provided to you by your Internet Service Provider? If so, you should contact your ISP for documentation, not bell.

Post by: fullbug on September 20, 2006, 02:40:06 PM
Yes, Bell is the one providing the modem, internet and all, it does have built in wireless....As I mentioned in my first post I have been on with them a dozen times and they say they fix it and then it doesnt work again a short time later, they arent being any help at all, thats why I was hoping someone here may be able to help....

Does anything in this info give me information I need?
Title: Re: Internet Keeps Disconnecting
Post by: Raptor on September 20, 2006, 02:58:12 PM
Well, you haven't verified that all the hardware is on the same channel and neither have you changed the channel yet, so I suggest you do that first. And if Bell supplied the hardware, it is Bell that you should contact when it comes to manuals.

Did Bell also supply the Sympatico DSL Modem, though? I think your provider did.. And if so, does it come with a wireless function built in?

And no, that screenshot does not tell us what channel the router is sending on.

I will look into the channel thing before I do anything else....
Bro, its Bell Sympatico that provides EVERYTHING, except the computer itself, and the wireless feature is in the modem, it has a little antenna on it and everything....
Here is a link to info on the modem....

I just got off the phone with Bell for the 80th time, the guy said channels would have nothing to do with the problem, they said the problem seems to have been on their end, the guy said our connection was too fast, whatever that means, everything seems to be working OK for now, but then again they have said they had fixed the problem before, so time will tell I guess....
In any case, thanx for all the help, much appreciated.... 8-)
Title: Re: Internet Keeps Disconnecting
Post by: Raptor on September 21, 2006, 10:12:12 AM
Well, okay, I suppose none of us could have guessed it was too fast. It's usually the other way around.  ;)

I have never heard of a connection being too fast before, thats a new one for me....

It is strange, but perhaps they were speaking of your router being set to the G-standard whilst you're using B-standard equipment.

Ehm, that's the only thing I can think of. I'm not very good with Wireless equipment.

Why does Bell provide you with your cable modem? Who is your ISP?

Are you using any of these programs?

C:\Program Files\notes holder\NotesHolder\NotesHolder.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Asr.exe] F:\Assorted Programs\Advanced Spyware Remover\Advanced Spyware Remover\Asr.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [avgnt.exe] C:\Program Files\AntiVir PersonalEdition Classic\avgnt.exe

This probably isn't legitimate:

9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.net - {F4430FE8-2638-42e5-B849-800749B94EED} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdocvw.dll

Other than that it looks O.K apart from the strange DPF entries, but I suppose that is because you installed some type of Yahoo software..

Those first 3 are legit programs that I have had a long time and are using, that PartyPoker one can go, but nothing you listed strikes me as something that would affect the internet....Thanx for going through the list....

I didn't recognize all of it, there's an automated scanner that can go through the list, but I don't know the adres. I'm hoping that someone else will post it for you.

There is a website that goes over your HJT files, and tells you what to remove but somehow I dont trust it...

Is that the one?

Thanx Fed, the first link is great, I like how some of the items are rated by stars....
One question, there was one file that I couldnt delete directly from HJT, this one: C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe
I went into that folder and found the file, it doesnt have the 'exe' and the end, but is it safe to just delete that file? There is another one next to it 'wuauclt1', should I delete that too? According to that`site some say its a trojan, others say its a file for auto update for Windows ME....
Title: Re: Internet Keeps Disconnecting
Post by: Fed on September 22, 2006, 06:41:28 PM
I rarely use HJT to remove entries, a far better way is to use it to identify what's there and then use a free cleaner to suit.
Suspected Trojan------> Ewido is a good place to start.

Post by: Fed on September 22, 2006, 06:42:51 PM
BTW, did you see the little paperclip at the site that allows you to upload & scan suspect files?

Edit: I have both of those files on my computer in the system32 directory, using HJT to remove entries should be done with extreme care & research.
