Title: I have a mobo problem I beleive.
Post by: modemthug on September 30, 2006, 02:22:30 PM
Well my computer wont even boot up anymore. And my only access to a computer is using my older 98.

The computer turns on. Fans everything are on. The LED light on my tower turns yellow and same with the computer screen. It doesn't even boot at all. I was told that it may be from my BIOS. But what can I do to try to recover my computer ?

Before all this I had alot of errors and it closed my programs off.. And at some point it's just reboot by it self.

No beeps that I know of.

Sorry for me not giving info on the computer..

It's a HP Pavilion a430n.. Didn't come with a boot disk. Had a optional restore on startup.

Windows XP

If there are no beeps at all on startup it is a hardware issue...and or that PSU is headed South on you.
Check all the connections you are familiar with and post back.

No sounds what so ever. Just double checked.

PSU going south? What?

I just cleaned it out the other day while it wasn't working to make sure dust wasnt an issue.

In the cleaning out process you have obviously dislodged one or more critical components...
CPU
RAM
Vid Card
etc.

You didn't use a vacuum in there did you ? ?

Did it stop working before or after you vacuumed?

Meaning that your Power Supply Unit (Where the power cable goes into) might needs to be replaced.

Do you see a POST screen at startup?

Power Good Signal

This is the cause of numerous PC problems where lights and fans are operating but it won't boot. This occurs because the power good signal is not received.

When the power supply first starts up, it takes some time for the components to get "up to speed" and start generating the proper DC voltages that the computer needs to operate. Before this time, if the computer were allowed to try to boot up, strange results could occur since the power might not be at the right voltage. It can take a half-second or longer for the power to stabilize, and this is an eternity to a processor that can run half a billion instructions per second! To prevent the computer from starting up prematurely, the power supply puts out a signal to the motherboard called "Power Good" (or "PowerGood", or "Power OK", or "PWR OK" and so on) after it completes its internal tests and determines that the power is ready for use. Until this signal is sent, the motherboard will refuse to start up the computer.

Please post all of that information as well as other information you have not given whether you think it is relevant or not. We have been guessing here for a while now.

See below.

Ok..

Well when I told one of my friends about this problem. She told me to take off auto restart so I can get the blue screen to see what it says and write down the code. It said something about the bios.. I wish I could remember exactly what it said. When I did a search on the code it gave me it said it was either a: something wrong with my bios or b: my memory.. But I put my memory in another computer and it worked fine.

So the next thing I've been trying to do is making a start up disk from this computer . But I havn't been able to get ahold of her to walk me through, and I'm not so sure if I can make a start up disk from this computer (being a windows 98) to boot a xp PC.

You can't say that unless you've tested it with diagnostic software.

1st post: Won't start
2nd Post; No beeps , no sound.

Then this

Step by step you should follow the advice given already...troubleshooting takes patience but if you jump around from one thing to the next you will go in circles...

Now you are saying you're trying to make a startup disk from this machine...if you have no beeps and no screen how is this possible ? ?

I though that too that's why I reread this whole thread and I guess it could be the power signal to the mobo. Sorry I'm new to all this.

Yes.

Remove the CMOS battery...about the size of a dime on the MBoard. Wait awhile then retry.

Did you try a known working PSU and booting with minimal devices attached?

If you have; you might need to replace the CPU and mainboard to see if either are faulty..

A common misconception.

Fans barely draw any power, the risk of damaging something is greater than the possibility of your problem being caused by a fan me thinks.

Switch the PSU and see if the problem persists. Just because you get light and fans doesn't mean the PSU is 100%.

No problem, too bad you've given up but come back anytime if you have other problems.
